Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide a highly active, industrially advantageous catalyst made of heteropolyacid palladium salt by which acetic acid can be produced from ethylene and oxygen by vapor phase one-stage catalytic reaction. CONSTITUTION:A heteropolyacid palladium salt of formula I (where A is an alkali metal; X is P, Si or As; a=0-2; b=0.1-1.0; and n=1 or 2), e.g. formula II is used as acetic acid production catalyst. This catalyst is prepared as follows; an aq. soln. of a heteropolyacid, pref. 12-molybdophosphoric acid and an aq. soln. of an alkali metavanadate are mixed in a molar ratio of 12:1-2. To the mixed soln. is then added a soln. of a divalent Pd salt, pref, palladium acetate in acetone, followed by removal of the solvent and heat treatment at 300-330 deg.C for several hr.
