Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare acetaldehyde and acetic acid in high yield and high selectivity with the little formation of by-products at a relatively low pressure, by reacting acetic anhydride with hydrogen in the vapor phase in the presence of a metallic palladium catalyst supported on a carrier.
CONSTITUTION: Acetic anhydride is reacted with hydrogen in the vapor phase in the presence of a metallic palladium catalyst supported on a carrier, e.g. alumina or silica, to prepare acetaldehyde and acetic acid. The reaction temperature is about 50W300°C, preferably 100W200°C, and the pressure is preferably normal pressure to 20atm. According to the method, the elution of the catalytic component into the reaction solution can be prevented with the stably retained catalytic activity, as opposed to the liquid-phase reaction.
