Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare an acetic acid ester, in extremely high conversion and selectivity, economically in an industrial scale, by adding an olefin to acetic acid in aqueous phase using trifluoromethanesulfonic acid as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Addition of a ≤5C olefin, e.g. ethylene, propylene, 1-butene, etc., to acetic acid in aqueous phase in the presence of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid as a catalyst gives the corresponding acetic acid ester in extremely high conversion and selectivity. The amount of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid is generally 0.05W10wt% based on the amount of acetic acid used as the starting material. Said catalyst can accelerate the reaction rate compared with mineral acids, e.g. H2SO4, or similar organic sulfonic acids. Moreover the catalyst scarcely causes side reactions, e.g. polymerization of olefin, causes no corrosion of the apparatuses, and has an excellent stability and a long lasting activity. Therefore its catalytic properties are excellent for industrial use.
