Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide an intake structure for an internal combustion engine, which permits such intake that effective state of combustion can always be obtined irrespective of whether the engine is in the high or low speed.
CONSTITUTION: An upper state high speed side intake air duct 12 defining a high speed side intake air port 11 not subject to swirl formation and a lower stage low speed side intake air duct 14 defining a low speed intake air port 13 for swirl formation are integrally formed within a cylinder head 5, and an inlet control valve 18 is pivotably mounted on a pin 17 between cylinder head 5 and manifold type intake air distribution cylinder 15. The valve 18 is operated by piston 21 with a spring 20, which is vertically operated by pressure introdeced from an opening 19 provided on the distribution cylinder 15, through rack 22 and gear 23. The valve 18 can thus act to lead the intake air to the side of the port 13 at the time of the low speed operation and to the side of the port 11 at the time of the high speed, so that it is possible to obtain an intake state suited to each of the low speed and high speed operations
