Abstract

PURPOSE: To increase the hardness of an engine member and enhance the wear resistance by irradiating the member surface with laser beam.
CONSTITUTION: The surface of an engine member such as a piston ring, valve seat, valve, cam shaft or crank shaft is irradiated with laser beam. The irradiated portion is subjected to impact hardening, glazing, quench hardening, etc., enhancing the wear resistance. Since radiation of laser beam can be adapted to any atomosphere and makes local treatment possible, cheap treatment can be carried out and the characteristics of a material can be utilized at portions requiring no treatment
