Abstract

PURPOSE: To preduce porous carbon particles of gool fluidity, high breaking strength and small diameter in a high yield by granulating carbon black having a predetermined diameter range into spheres after which the spheres are dipped in a resin binder and calcined.
CONSTITUTION: Carbon black having a diameter range of 150W3,000Å and a DBP absorption quantity of 60W200ml/100g is granulated to spheres of 0.1W5mm diameter esp. by a rotary moving method. The spheres are then dipped in a soln. of a carbonizable binder such as phenol formaldehyde resin, in a solvent such as acetone, showing a carbonization yield more than 10% by calcination. After volatilizing the solvent the spheres are carbonized by calcination under an inert gas atmosphere such as N2 at 500W1,200, esp. 500W800°C. The resulting porous carbon particles have a pore vol. of 0.05W1.0cc/g, pore distribution peak of 100W1,000Å and breaking strengh of 0.6W5.0kg/mm2.
