Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce the quantity of radiation in a pressure vessel and the exposure of an operator, by coupling a clad remover in parallel with a pipe connected through valves to the discharge sides of two recirculation loops coupled to the pressure vessel.
CONSTITUTION: When a nuclear reactor is stopped, pump discharge valves 19, 19' are closed and valves 16, 17 are opened and one of recirculation pumps 3, 3' is run. Reactor water 5 from the pump 3 passes through a pipe 15 and flows in reverse through through the other recirculation pump 3' and a pipe 2'. The reactor water 5 then flows into a downcomer 12' through a pressure vessel nozzle 13' so that clad deposited on the inside of downcomers 14, 14' is buoyed up and conducted in to the moving pump 3 together with the reactor water. The mixture of the reactor water with the clad then flows toward the pipe 15. The clad is conducted together with the reactor water to a clad remover 6. The reactor water removed of the clad is returned to the pressure vessel 1 or discharged from the circuration system. When the unclear reactor is in operation, a jet at the maximum speed of 1.5 m/sec can be caused from the pressure vessel nozzle 13 to the downcomer 14' to effectively buoy up and discharge the deposited clad.
