Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the lifetime of an electrochromic display element by protecting the electrode, which is prepared by laminating a color developing layer having a high density and a color developing layer having a norml density upon a dispaly electrode.
CONSTITUTION: An optically transparent substrate 9 is equipped with a display transparent electrode 10 which has its display portion vacuum-evaporated with WO3. This WO3 is heated at 340 to 400°C in the stmosphere for an hour to form a crystallized film 11 of WO3 having a density of 7.0 to 7.5 g/cm3. Then, the WO3 is vacuum-evaporated to form an amorphous film 12 of WO3 having a density of 5.5 to 6.5 g/cm3. The electrode 10 other than this color developing layer is protected with a tansparent insulating layer 13 which is prepared by the application of silicone varnish, followed by the drying step. The substrate 14 at the opposite side is vacuum-evaporated with the amorphous film of WO3 so that a slightly colored opposite color developing layer 16 is formed by the power supply to the electrode in advance. Both of the substrates are sealed through a spacer 17 with a sealer 18, and an electrolyte 20 is vacuum-injected from an injection port 19. Then, the sealing process is performed with glass beads 21 and a glass plate 22.
