Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the viscosity of a liq. crystal at low temp. and to improve the responding properties by converting at least one of optically transparent substrates into a laminated substrate with electrically conductive transparent films formed on both sides and using one of the films as a heat generating film and the other as a display film. CONSTITUTION:A liq. crystal composition 14 is sealed with a seal 15 between a laminated substrate 13A having an electrically conductive transparent film 11 for heat generation on one surface of a substrate 13 and an electrically conductive transparent film 12 for an electrode on the other surface and a substrate 13' having an electrically conductive transparent film 12'. Polarizing plates 17, 17 are laid on the surfaces of the substrates 13A, 13'. A terminal 18 is connected to the film 11, and an electric wire 19 is connected to the terminal 18. When a liq. crystal is held between 2 substrates each having an electrically conductive transparent film for heat generation, the time required to reduce the viscosity of the crystal can be shortened, and the load of the film can be relieved.
