Abstract

PURPOSE: To activate activated carbon contg. an alkali metal cpd. in a predetermined ratio ao that it can efficiently adsorption remove sulfur cpds., by heat treating the carbon at a high temp. in an atmosphere of inert gas contg. steam and/or CO2.
CONSTITUTION: Raw material for activated carbon, e.g. carbohydrate, grains or cocount husk is activated at 800W1200°C, and an alkali metal cpd. such as Na2SO4 is added to the formed activated carbon in an amt. of 2.5W10, esp. 0.5W5.0 mg- atom/g as metal. The carbon contg. the alkali metal cpd. is then activated at 450W 700, esp. 550W650°C in an atmosphere of inert gas contg. steam and/or CO2 gas. The resulting activated carbon is contacted to a gas contg. S cpds. such as H2S, carbonyl sulfide and mercaptans at 5W150°C to efficiently adsorption remove the S cpds.
