Abstract

(57)【要約】 【目的】 ゴルフボールのディンプルパターンを改良す
ることによってゴルフボールの空気力学的特性を改善す
る。 【構成】 ゴルフボールはその外側球面上にディンプル
を有する。このディンプルは複数の仮想的な格子ライン
によって形成される球を等分割したパターンに従って配
置されており、格子ラインは前記外側球状表面を２０個
の球面三角形領域を有する球状二十面体に分割してい
る。球面三角形領域の各々は等しい長さの三つの辺と等
しい長さの三つの中線とを有する球面正三角形を形成す
る前記格子ラインの三つによって形成されている。ディ
ンプルは、前記辺の各々が少なくとも７個のディンプル
と半径方向に交わり前記中線の各々が少なくとも６個の
ディンプルと半径方向に交わるように配置されている。
ゴルフボールは、０．１４０インチ（3.56mm）の直径を
有する２４２個のディンプルと０．１５０インチ（3.81
mm）の直径を有する１２０個のディンプルからなる全部
で３６２個のディンプルを有する。

Description

【発明の詳細な説明】
【０００１】
【産業上の利用分野】この発明はゴルフボールに関す
る。さらに詳しくは、この発明はゴルフボールの外側球
状表面上にディンプルを配置するためのパターンに関す
る。
【０００２】
【従来の技術】ディンプルはゴルフボールの空気力学特
性に重要な影響を与える。例えば、ディンプルによって
ゴルフボールのまわりには空気の乱流層が形成され、こ
の乱流層によって抵抗が軽減されるため飛距離が伸び
る。また、ゴルフボールをゴルフクラブによって打った
あとゴルフボールが逆方向にスピン、すなわち回転する
とき、ディンプルのためにリフト（揚力）が大きくな
る。ゴルフボールがバックスピンしているとき、ディン
プルによってゴルフボールの上方における空気の流れが
改善され、その結果、ゴルフボールの下方における空気
圧力が大きくなって、リフトが大きくなる。周知のよう
に、リフト（揚力）とドラッグ（抵抗）は、ディンプル
を球面二十面体や球面八面体あるいは球面十二面体など
の様々な球を等分割するパターンに従って配置すること
によって変えることができる。リフトを大きくすると、
ゴルフボールは高い軌道をとる。ドラッグを減らすと、
ゴルフボールは遠くまで飛ぶ。リフトとドラッグを適切
に組み合わせることによって満足すべき特性が得られ
る。
【０００３】
【発明が解決しようとする課題】現在は、二つのタイプ
のゴルフボールが最も一般的である。スリーピースのゴ
ルフボールはその周囲に巻線を有する小さなコアと、デ
ィンプルが形成されているカバーとを有する。ツーピー
スのゴルフボールは巻線を持たない大きなコアと、ディ
ンプルが形成されているカバーとを有する。ゴルフボー
ルの別の空気力学特性はスピン速度である。スピン速度
はコアの硬さに対するカバーの硬さによって決まる。一
般に、スリーピースのゴルフボールはツーピースのゴル
フボールよりも大きなスピン速度を有する。従って、あ
る特定のディンプルパターンがスリーピースのゴルフボ
ールに対して満足すべき特性を持っていても、ツーピー
スのゴルフボールに対しては満足すべき特性を持たない
ということが起きる。
【０００４】ゴルフボールに対するディンプルパターン
は多くの変形を有する。従来のディンプルパターンの一
つは、球状二十面体である。このパターンではディンプ
ルは２０個の球面三角形領域に配置されている。完璧な
二十面体ディンプルパターンがパフ(Pugh)の英国特許公
報第 377,354号に開示されている。市場において最も入
手しやすいゴルフボールは、ゴルフボールの赤道(equat
or) 上に位置するまっすぐな合わせ目(seam)あるいは分
離線(parting line)が設けられたカバーを有することか
ら、パフの特許公報に開示されている球面二十面体パタ
ーンは赤道が邪魔になるという問題がある。前述したま
っすぐな合わせ目あるいは分離線はゴルフボールを製造
するときに使われる従来の成形プロセスによって生じ
る。カーステン・ソルハイム(Karsten Solheim) の米国
特許第 4,653,758号は、カバーがゴルフボールの赤道を
行ったり来たりして横切るような形の合わせ目を有し、
従って、合わせ目がパフのディンプルパターンを邪魔す
ることがないようなゴルフボール製造法によってこの問
題を解決している。
【０００５】ゴルフボールはまた、合衆国ゴルフ協会(U
nited States Golf Association)（ＵＳＧＡ）によって
“球対称性(spherical symmmetry) ”と呼ばれているも
のも持っていなければならない。球対称性あるいは空気
力学的対称性は、ゴルフボールがある一つの軸のまわり
に回転するようにボールを飛ばし、次に同じゴルフボー
ルが別の軸のまわりに回転するようにして飛ばすことに
よって決定する。飛びの長さ（キャリー）と飛びの時間
の違いが問題にされる。ＵＳＧＡのゴルフルールに適合
するには、これらの違いはキャリーに対しては３ヤード
（2.74ｍ）以下、また飛びの時間に対しては０．２０秒
以下でなければならない。適合しないゴルフボールのデ
ィンプルパターンを変えると、空気力学的対称性が得ら
れるようになる。
【０００６】特にそれに限定されるわけではないが、前
述したソルハイムの特許に基づいて形成されたカバーを
有するようなツーピースゴルフボールに対して主として
使用するための、改善されたディンプルパターンが要求
されている。
【０００７】この発明の目的は、特にツーピースゴルフ
ボールに対して空気力学特性が改善されるようなゴルフ
ボールのディンプルパターンを提供することである。こ
の発明の別の目的は、ドラッグ（抵抗）を軽減しリフト
（揚力）を大きくするようなゴルフボールのディンプル
パターンを提供することである。この発明のさらに別の
目的は、ゴルフボールが空気力学的に対称になるような
ゴルフボールのディンプルパターンを提供することであ
る。
【０００８】
【課題を解決するための手段】この発明は、ディンプル
が形成されている外側球状表面を有するゴルフボールを
提供している。ディンプルは、外側球状表面を２０個の
球面三角形領域を有する球状二十面体に分割する複数の
仮想的な格子ラインによって決まる球を等分割したパタ
ーンに配置されている。各球面三角形領域は格子ライン
のうちの三つによって形成されている。格子ラインは、
等しい長さの三つの辺と等しい長さの三つの中線(media
n)を有する球面正三角形を形成している。ディンプルに
対して、三角形の各辺が少なくとも７個のディンプルと
半径方向に交わり、三角形の各中線が少なくとも６個の
ディンプルと半径方向に交わるように配置されている。
【０００９】実施例においては、三角形の各辺が半径方
向に横切っているディンプルは第１の直径を有し、三角
形の各中線が半径方向に横切っているディンプルの少な
くとも二つは第２の直径を有する。第１の直径は第２の
直径よりも小さい。第２の直径を有するディンプルは三
角形の内側において円形アレイ状に配置されている。三
角形の内側にはディンプルのない複数の領域が設けられ
ている。ディンプルのない領域の各々は第１の直径を有
する三つのディンプルと第２の直径を有する二つのディ
ンプルによって囲まれている。このゴルフボールは、約
０．１４０インチ（3.56mm）の第１の直径を有する２４
２個のディンプルと、約０．１５０インチ（3.81mm）の
第２の直径を有する１２０個のディンプルからなる全部
で３６２個のディンプルを有する。

【実施例】以下、添付図面に基づいてこの発明の実施例
を説明する。図１及び図２を参照するとわかるように、
ゴルフボール１０は外側球状表面１２を有する。外側球
状表面１２は複数の仮想的な格子ライン１４によって、
同じ形の２０個の球面三角形領域１６からなる球状二十
面体のような測地線パターン（球を等分割したパター
ン）に分割されている。球面三角形領域１６のうちの１
０個は外側球状表面１２の極部分に配置されており、残
りの１０個の球面三角形領域１６は外側球状表面１２の
赤道部分に配置されている。
【００１１】図３からわかるように、各球面三角形領域
１６は格子ライン１４の三つによって形成されている。
格子ライン１４は、三つの頂点Ａ，Ｂ，Ｃと、等しい長
さの三つの辺ＡＢ，ＢＣ，ＣＡとを有する球面正三角形
Ｔを形成している。各球面正三角形Ｔはまた図３に示さ
れているように等しい長さの三つの中線ＡＤ，ＢＥ，Ｃ
Ｆも有する。中線ＡＤ，ＢＥ，ＣＦは、三つの頂点Ａ，
Ｂ，Ｃと、三つの辺ＡＢ，ＢＣ，ＣＡの中点Ｄ，Ｅ，Ｆ
の間を延びている。三つの中線ＡＤ，ＢＥ，ＣＦは中点
Ｇにおいて互いに交わっている。
【００１２】ゴルフボール１０はコア（図示されていな
い）と、二つの半球部２０，２２から形成されているカ
バー１８を有する。従来の成形プロセスにおいてカバー
１８の半球部２０，２２が一体に接合されるところに、
合わせ目２４あるいは分離線ができる。カバー１８は圧
縮成形あるいは射出成形によって製造される。合わせ目
２４はゴルフボール１０の赤道２６を行ったり来たりし
て横切っている。この合わせ目２４は、この明細書にお
いても参照されている１９８７年３月３１日に特許され
たカーステン・ソルハイムの米国特許第 4,653,758号に
開示されている従来の方法で形成される。
【００１３】外側球状表面１２にはディンプル２８が形
成されている。ディンプル２８は、球状二十面体パター
ンの球面三角形領域１６を形成する格子ライン１４上に
配置されている。１８個のディンプル２８が各球面三角
形領域１６の中に配置されている。ディンプル３０が球
面三角形領域１６の内側において円形アレイ状に配置さ
れている。ディンプル３２が球面三角形領域１６の頂点
の近くに配置されている。６個のディンプル３０と３個
のディンプル３２が各球面三角形領域１６の中に配置さ
れている。ディンプル３０の円形アレイの中心にはディ
ンプル３４が配置されている。各球面三角形領域１６に
はディンプル３４が一つだけ設けられている。
【００１４】球面三角形領域１６の各々の中には、球面
正三角形Ｔの辺ＡＢ，ＢＣ，ＣＡがそれぞれ少なくとも
７個のディンプル２８と半径方向に交わり、中線ＡＤ，
ＢＥ，ＣＦのそれぞれが少なくとも６個のディンプル
（すなわち、ディンプル２８の２個と、ディンプル３０
の２個と、ディンプル３２の１個と、ディンプル３４の
１個）と半径方向に交わるような形にディンプル２８，
３０，３２，３４が配置されている。ディンプル２８，
３０，３２，３４のすべては、球面正三角形Ｔの辺Ａ
Ｂ，ＢＣ，ＣＡの一つか、あるいは中線ＡＤ，ＢＥ，Ｃ
Ｆの一つが半径方向に交わっている。こうしたディンプ
ル配置の結果、ドラッグが減りリフトが大きくなってゴ
ルフボール１０に対する空気力学特性が改善される。
【００１５】ゴルフボール１０の実施例においてはディ
ンプル２８，３２，３４は約０．１４０インチ（3.56m
m）の直径を有し、ディンプル３０は約０．１５０イン
チ（3.81mm）の直径を有する。ディンプル２８，３０，
３２，３４のすべては約０．０１１２インチ（0.284mm
）の深さと、約０．０９０インチ（2.29mm）の半径を
有する。ディンプル２８，３２，３４に対する直径と深
さの比は１２．５対１であり、ディンプル３０に対する
直径と深さの比は１３．４対１である。ゴルフボール１
０は全部で３６２個のディンプルを有する。３６２個の
ディンプルは０．１４０インチ（3.56mm）の直径を有す
る２４２個のディンプルと、０．１５０インチ（3.81m
m）の直径を有する１２０個のディンプルからなってい
る。ゴルフボール１０の別の実施例においては、ディン
プル２８，３２，３４は０．１５０インチ（3.81mm）の
直径を有し、ディンプル３０は０．１４０インチ（3.56
mm）の直径を有する。
【００１６】６個のぼうず領域あるいはディンプルのな
い領域３６が各球面三角形領域１６の内側に配置されて
いる。これらのディンプルのない領域３６は、ディンプ
ル２８の二つとディンプル３０の二つとディンプル３２
の一つからなる５個のディンプルによって囲まれてい
る。ディンプルのない領域３６は一般に五角形形状を有
する。ゴルフボール１０の外側球状表面１２の６７．７
％がディンプル２８，３０，３２，３４によって覆われ
ており、外側球状表面１２の残りの３２．３％にはディ
ンプルがない。
【００１７】ゴルフボール１０はそのまわりに巻線が巻
かれている小さなコアを有するスリーピースタイプか、
あるいは巻線を持たない大きなコアを有するツーピース
タイプである。
【００１８】この発明は特にそれに限定されるわけでは
ないが、前述したソルハイムの特許に基づいて形成され
たカバーを有するツーピースゴルフボールに対して主と
して使用するための、改善されたディンプルパターンを
提供していることがわかろう。

Claims (14)

    【特許請求の範囲】
  1. 【請求項１】 ディンプルが形成されている外側球状表
    面を有するゴルフボールであって、 前記ディンプルが複数の仮想的な格子ラインによって形
    成される球を等分割したパターンに従って配置され、前
    記格子ラインが前記外側球状表面を２０個の球面三角形
    領域を有する球状二十面体に分割しており、前記球面三
    角形領域の各々が等しい長さの三つの辺と等しい長さの
    三つの中線とを有する球面正三角形を形成する前記格子
    ラインの三つによって形成されており、前記ディンプル
    が、前記辺の各々が少なくとも７個のディンプルと半径
    方向に交わり前記中線の各々が少なくとも６個のディン
    プルと半径方向に交わるように配置されているゴルフボ
    ール。
  2. 【請求項２】 前記辺の各々が半径方向に交わる前記デ
    ィンプルが第１の直径を有し、前記中線の各々が半径方
    向に交わるディンプルの少なくとも２個が第２の直径を
    有する請求項１に記載のゴルフボール。
  3. 【請求項３】 前記第１の直径が前記第２の直径よりも
    小さいことを特徴とする請求項２に記載のゴルフボー
    ル。
  4. 【請求項４】 前記第１の直径が前記第２の直径よりも
    大きいことを特徴とする請求項２に記載のゴルフボー
    ル。
  5. 【請求項５】 前記第２の直径を有するディンプルが前
    記球面三角形の内側で円形アレイ状に配置されているこ
    とを特徴とする請求項３に記載のゴルフボール。
  6. 【請求項６】 前記球面三角形の内側にディンプルのな
    い複数の領域が設けられており、このディンプルのない
    領域の各々が前記第１の直径の３個のディンプルと前記
    第２の直径の２個のディンプルによって囲まれているこ
    とを特徴とする請求項１に記載のゴルフボール。
  7. 【請求項７】 前記ディンプルのない領域が略五角形形
    状を有する請求項６に記載のゴルフボール。
  8. 【請求項８】 前記第１の直径が約０．１４０インチ
    （3.56mm）であり、前記第２の直径が約０．１５０イン
    チ（3.81mm）である請求項３に記載のゴルフボール。
  9. 【請求項９】 カバーの内側にコアが設けられ、前記カ
    バーがゴルフボールが製造されるときに一体に成形され
    る二つの半球部から形成されていることを特徴とする請
    求項１に記載のゴルフボール。
  10. 【請求項１０】 前記カバーの前記二つの半球部が、ゴ
    ルフボールの赤道にほぼ沿って延びる合わせ目で互いに
    一体化されていることを特徴とする請求項９に記載のゴ
    ルフボール。
  11. 【請求項１１】 前記合わせ目が前記赤道を横切って行
    ったり来たりしていることを特徴とする請求項１０に記
    載のゴルフボール。
  12. 【請求項１２】 全部で３６２個のディンプルが球を等
    分割したパターンに従って配置されていることを特徴と
    する請求項３に記載のゴルフボール。
  13. 【請求項１３】 ２４２個のディンプルが前記第１の直
    径を有し、１２０個のディンプルが前記第２の直径を有
    することを特徴とする請求項１２に記載のゴルフボー
    ル。
  14. 【請求項１４】 前記外側球状表面の約６８％が３６２
    個のディンプルによって覆われており、前記外側球状表
    面の約３２％にはディンプルが設けられていないことを
    特徴とする請求項１２に記載のゴルフボール。
