A representative example of the former is a pulse position modulation method (PPM method), and a representative example of the latter is a pulse width modulation method (PWM method). The recording density of the signal is
In the PPM method, one recording mark corresponds to one piece of information, whereas in the PWM method, information is contained in both the rising and falling edges of the signal pulse, so generally PPM
In other words, it can be said that the PWM method is more suitable as a recording method for achieving higher recording densities and higher transfer rates in the future.

。Problems to be Solved by the Invention As mentioned above, the PWM method is suitable for increasing recording density, but in the PWM method, since information is contained in both the rise and fall of the pulse, the waveform distortion is small. , symmetrical pulses are required. However, in heat mode (Koyo J recording), the reached temperature and cooling conditions are different between the part where the laser beam is turned on at the tip of the mark and the part where it is turned off at the end, so the shapes of the tip and the end become asymmetrical. PW causes waveform distortion.
There was a problem in that there were cases where the method was not suitable for the M method.

In order to realize the d-recording method, it is necessary to form recording marks that are symmetrical in the front and rear. In general, signal recording is shown in Figure 2 (a>

があった。In other words, the tip of the recording mark is slightly thin and pointed, and the end is thick (rounded). This is because even when irradiated with the same laser power, the temperature at the tip rises from room temperature, so the area that reaches high temperature is narrow. However, this is thought to be due to the fact that the temperature at the end has already risen due to conduction heat from the front part, so the area that reaches high temperature becomes wider. When the signal is optically reproduced from this recording mark, the result is as shown in Figure 2 (c). It became like this,
Waveform distortion occurs, and the rise and fall of the pulse are not symmetrical. This may not be suitable for the PWM method in which information is provided at both the rise and fall of the pulse.

We investigated the influence of mark size and recording power on mark shape distortion, and as a result, we discovered a signal recording method that can minimize shape distortion of recorded marks. That is, as shown in Figure 1. By changing the recording power according to the recorded mark length, it is possible to always obtain recorded marks with small distortion in the reproduced waveform, and in turn, it is possible to obtain a reproduced waveform that is more suitable for the PWM method. It is something.

That is, when recording a 1.25 MHz signal, the optimum recording power that can minimize waveform distortion is 6 mW. (In this case, the recording mark length is about 2 μm.) The relationship between the recording frequency and the optimal recording power found in the same way,
That is, the relationship between the recording mark length and the optimum recording power is shown in FIG. It can be seen from FIG. 4 that the optimum recording power decreases as the recording mark length increases.Based on this result, an experiment was conducted in which the recording power was varied in accordance with the recorded mark length.

An optical disc was prepared by forming a recording thin film, a ZnS protective layer with a thickness of 200 nm, by a sequential thorn evaporation method, and pasting the same polycarbonate substrate as the substrate thereon with an adhesive. In this optical disc, signals can be rewritten by utilizing a reversible phase transition between amorphous and crystalline states caused by laser beam irradiation. That is, the recording thin film can be made amorphous by heating and rapidly cooling by laser beam irradiation, and can be crystallized by removing heat and slowly cooling.

The recording power is changed so that waveform distortion is minimized according to the length of the recorded mark. FIG. 7(f) shows the reproduced waveform of the recorded signal. FIG. 7(g) shows a digital signal pattern binarized by a demodulation circuit that uses the zero crossing of this reproduced waveform as a determination level. It can be seen that this signal pattern almost completely reproduces the signal pattern in (a) with almost no phase fluctuation. This is because the recording power is optimized so that the shape distortion of each recording pattern is minimized. This is considered to be a positive effect.

By using this method, a reproduced waveform with small waveform distortion can be obtained, resulting in a reproduced waveform that is more suitable for the PWM recording method.
