Description
本開示に係る実施形態を説明する前に、比較形態を参照しつつ、鏡として機能する状態と、表示装置として機能する状態と、を切り替えることができる光学装置の基本的な構造及び機能を説明する。なお、このような光学装置は、例えば、通常は鏡として機能し、必要な時に車内温度,走行速度等を表示する車両用のルームミラー,サイドミラー等に用いることができる。
図3に、第1実施形態による光学装置101の構造を示す。第1実施形態による光学装置101は、反射型偏光板21の固定方法を除いて、比較形態による光学装置100と同じ構造及び構成を有する。
第1実施形態では、反射型偏光板21が表示装置10に貼り付けられていた。しかし、反射型偏光板21は、別途用意した透光プレートに貼り付けられていてもよい。以下では、第2実施形態として、反射型偏光板21が透光プレートに貼り付けられた光学装置について説明する。
第1実施形態及び第2実施形態では、所望の画像を表示する手段として、有機EL素子を用いた表示装置10を例示した。しかし、所望の画像を表示する手段として、液晶表示素子を含む光出射装置を用いてもよい。以下では、第3実施形態として、液晶表示素子を含む光出射装置を用いた光学装置について説明する。
図6に、第1実施形態の変形例による光学装置104を示す。なお、本変形例は、第2実施形態及び第3実施形態にも適用可能である。

Claims (5)
- 光を出射する状態と光を反射して鏡として機能する状態とを切り替えることができる光学装置であって、
光出射面を有する光出射装置と、
前記光出射装置の前記光出射面に対向して配置される吸収型偏光板と、
前記光出射装置と前記吸収型偏光板との間に配置され、透過する偏光の偏光方向を変換する液晶層を備える液晶光学素子と、
前記光出射装置と前記液晶光学素子との間に配置される反射型偏光板と、
制御装置と、
を備え、
前記吸収型偏光板は、当該吸収型偏光板の面内方向において、一方向に沿う吸収軸と前記一方向に直交する方向に沿うように透過軸が位置するように設けられており、
前記反射型偏光板は、当該反射型偏光板の面内方向において、前記一方向に沿う反射軸と前記一方向に直交する方向に沿うように透過軸が位置するように設けられており、
前記光出射装置は、画像を含む表示光を発光可能な発光装置であり、前記光出射面から前記表示光が出射するときには、前記反射型偏光板の透過軸と同じ偏光成分の偏光を含む光を出射する発光装置であり、
前記反射型偏光板は、前記光出射装置を向く表面側にのみ設けられる接着層により前記光出射装置と接着し、前記液晶光学素子とは接着しておらず、
前記制御装置は、
前記光学装置が光を出射する状態のときには、前記光出射装置から出射される前記表示光が、前記接着層、前記反射型偏光板、前記液晶光学素子および前記吸収型偏光板の順に通過して出射し、
前記光学装置が光を反射する状態のときには、当該光学装置に入光する外光が、前記吸収型偏光板および前記液晶光学素子の順に通過して、前記反射型偏光板の反射軸と同じ偏光成分の光が、前記接着層を通ることなく前記反射型偏光板に到達して反射され、当該反射した光が前記液晶光学素子および前記吸収型偏光板の順に通過して出射するように、
前記光出射装置の発光および前記液晶光学素子の偏光方向の変換を制御する、
光学装置。 - 前記光出射装置は、有機EL(electro‐luminescence)素子を用いた表示装置である、
請求項1に記載の光学装置。 - 前記反射型偏光板は、ワイヤーグリッドタイプまたは多層フィルムタイプの偏光板である、
