Description
The present invention relates to a method for evaluating toner used in an electrophotographic image forming apparatus, and more particularly to a method for measuring and evaluating the surface potential of toner using SPM, and further relates to a method for producing toner using the method.
In recent years, there has been a growing demand for higher image quality for various image forming apparatuses such as copiers and printers, and recently it has been very important to improve the reproducibility of fine dots.
The dot reproducibility is affected by the charge amount and fluidity of toner and developer, and it is necessary to stably supply a uniform toner layer or developer layer to a fine latent image portion.
Further, as the image quality is improved, the toner used in the toner is required to have a smaller particle size and higher functionality. For this reason, the toner structure is fine and complicated, and precise control at the time of production is required.
For the purpose of stably charging the toner, it is known to add a charge control agent to the toner. For example, metal complexes of monoazo dyes, nitrohumic acid and salts thereof, salicylic acid, naphthoic acid, dicarboxylic acid Co, Cr Metal complex amino compounds such as Fe, quaternary ammonium salts, organic dyes, and the like are used.
In order to obtain a good image, fluidity is imparted to the toner. For this reason, it is generally effective to add hydrophobic metal oxide particles, lubricant particles, etc. as fluidity improvers. Particles such as metal oxides, resins and metal soaps are used as additives. Additives include fluidity such as fluororesins such as polytetrafluoroethylene, lubricants such as zinc stearate, abrasives such as cerium oxide and silicon carbide, and inorganic oxides such as SiO 2 and TiO 2 with hydrophobic surfaces. Examples thereof include an imparting agent, a known anti-caking agent, and a surface-treated product thereof, and hydrophobic silica is particularly preferably used.
For example, an evaluation method called blow-off is used as a method for evaluating the charging characteristics of the toner (Non-Patent Document 1). In this evaluation method, after a developer in which a carrier and toner are electrostatically attached is placed in a metal container with a mesh (mesh) having an opening having a diameter that allows only toner to pass through. Then, a gas such as dry air is blown, and only the toner is blown out of the metal container, and the electric charge having the same charge amount as that of the toner and having the opposite polarity is detected as the whole container.
However, since this blow-off method detects the average amount of charge with respect to the toner weight, the additive adhesion or fixation state to the surface of each toner particle, the toner composition, size, shape, surface state, or those In fact, no effective information reflecting the fine structure of the toner derived from the distribution of toner was obtained.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION An object of the present invention is to provide a toner evaluation method and a toner manufacturing method using the same so that the distribution of the surface potential of the toner, which is the surface electrical characteristics of the toner, can be known.

Said subject is solved by the following means (1)-(6).
(1) A toner evaluation method in which the surface potential of a toner composed of at least a resin and a pigment is fixed to a conductive substrate and the surface potential of the toner is evaluated by an SPM (Scanning Probe Microscope) method, including the toner The surface potential of the toner in a predetermined range on the conductive substrate is measured, and the frequency of the potential difference between the toner surface potential and the surface potential of the conductive substrate is determined based on the obtained measurement value. The product of the difference between the toner surface potential and the surface potential of the conductive substrate and the frequency is obtained.
(2) In the toner evaluation method according to (1), a difference between a toner surface potential in a range of 10 μm × 10 μm on the conductive substrate containing the toner and a surface potential of the conductive substrate. Is measured in the range of −10 V to 10 V.
(3) In the toner evaluation method according to (1) or (2), a scan rate for measuring a surface potential in a predetermined range on the conductive substrate containing the toner is 0.01. It is characterized by being performed in a range of ˜2 Hz.
(4) In the toner evaluation method according to any one of (1) to (3), the measurement by the SPM method uses a scanning Kelvin force method.
(5) In the toner evaluation method according to any one of (1) to (4), the difference between the toner surface potential and the surface potential of a conductive substrate and the integrated value of the frequency are used to calculate the toner. The minimum peak value of the surface potential is obtained, and the toner is evaluated using the minimum peak value.
(6) A toner manufacturing method using the evaluation method according to any one of (1) to (5).
It is possible to provide a toner evaluation method and a toner production method using the same, in which the distribution of the surface potential of the toner, which is the surface electrical characteristics of the toner, can be known.
The SPM (Scanning Probe Microscope) method is a measurement that scans a probe with a tip of about 10 nmφ, detects various physical quantities acting between the probe and the sample surface, and observes the shape and potential of the sample surface. Is the law.
As a method of detecting the surface potential of the toner by such SPM method, there are a method such as a scanning Kelvin force method and a scanning Maxwell stress method, and the potential between the probe and the toner surface is determined by either method. However, it is preferable to use the scanning Kelvin force method in terms of stability of probe position control.
As a probe for the SPM method, a commercially available cantilever for measuring electrical characteristics for SPM can be used. Such a cantilever is made of single crystal silicon subjected to a conductive treatment with platinum or the like, and has a spring constant of 0. One having a resonance frequency of 10 to 300 KHz is preferably used. In a scanning probe microscope (SPM), a cantilever refers to the entire cantilever having a probe formed in the vicinity of a free end, and is a component closest to the sample to be measured.
When performing the evaluation, the toner is fixed to a conductive substrate and placed on the stage of an SPM apparatus (Scanning Probe Microscope). For fixing the toner, it is preferable to use a conductive adhesive or a conductive carbon tape for SEM. In the evaluation, the conductive substrate is connected to the ground.
Next, the sample on the conductive substrate placed on the stage on the SPM apparatus is observed with a microscope or the like, and the toner to be evaluated is selected. Then, after adjusting the position so as to be approximately in the center of the SPM measurement region, the surface potential in a predetermined range on the conductive substrate containing the toner is measured. The measurement range at this time can be adjusted according to the toner size.
