BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a light intensity modulation light source that is used in the fields of optical communication, optical signal processing, and the like, and particularly suitable for use in generating an optical signal having a stable optical output.
[0002]
[Prior art]
In recent years, the speed of signals used in optical communication has become higher, and the method of modulating light intensity by internal modulation in a semiconductor laser conventionally used as a light source for optical signals has its unique characteristics. As a result of the chirp, the light characteristics change, and the transmission distance of the optical signal is limited. Therefore, a light intensity modulation light source using a waveguide type light intensity modulator that modulates the intensity of light by external modulation that performs light modulation outside the light source and outputs an optical signal has a high speed, chirp zero, within a certain range. Have been used for reasons such as good linearity of the modulation characteristics.
In this waveguide type optical intensity modulator, the modulation curve indicating the modulation characteristic is a sinusoidal waveform such as a modulation curve W10 shown in FIG. Usually, the operating point of the waveguide type optical intensity modulator is often set to a midpoint corresponding to 1/2 of the maximum optical output of the modulation curve, and the bias voltage V10 is applied to the waveguide type optical intensity modulator. As a result, the operating point is set at the midpoint P10 of the modulation curve W10.
[0003]
By the way, the modulation curve W10 of the waveguide type light intensity modulator is shifted to, for example, the modulation curve W11 in a state where the fixed bias voltage V10 is applied, and the operating point shifts from the middle point P10 to the point P13. End up. As a result, the light output modulated by the waveguide-type light intensity modulator is distorted.
As an optical modulation device that performs control for correcting the operating point P13 where the
[0004]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, the above-described conventional light modulation device can correct the operating point of the waveguide-type light intensity modulator when the light transmission characteristic (light insertion loss) does not change as in the modulation curve W11. When the operating point deviates from the midpoint of the modulation curve due to the change of the light transmission characteristic (light insertion loss) as in the modulation curve W12, the shifted operating point cannot be corrected.
For example, it is assumed that the modulation curve W10 shown in FIG. 7 is changed to the modulation curve W12 due to a change in the optical insertion loss of the waveguide type light intensity modulator. In the conventional optical modulation device, the operating point is set to the point P14, and not the point P12 which is the middle point of the modulation curve W12, thereby causing modulation distortion.
Therefore, a light intensity modulation light source using a conventional light modulation device generates an optical signal having a stable light output without distortion when the light insertion loss of the waveguide light intensity modulator changes. There was a problem that it was not possible.
The present invention has been made in view of such circumstances, and an object of the present invention is to provide a light intensity modulated light source capable of generating an optical signal having a stable light output without distortion.
[0005]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to solve the above problems, the present invention provides a modulation curve indicating the light intensity modulation characteristics of a waveguide light intensity modulator, wherein internal charges generated by a DC voltage applied to the waveguide light intensity modulator are Knowledge that the light transmission characteristics (optical insertion loss) of the waveguide type optical intensity modulator change due to DC drift, which is a phenomenon of canceling the externally applied electric field, or shift due to ambient temperature change, or ambient temperature change Based on the above, the following means are provided.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Hereinafter, an embodiment of the present invention will be described with reference to the drawings.
First, the configuration and operation of a waveguide type light intensity modulator used in an embodiment of the present invention will be described. In the waveguide type light intensity modulator, a metal such as titanium (Ti) is diffused on the surface of a lithium niobate (LiNbO3; LN) crystal to form a waveguide.

[0018]
For example, when the modulation curve W1 shown in FIG. 4 is shifted to the right to become the modulation curve W2, the operating point corresponding to the bias voltage V1 as compared with the light intensity of the branched light B2 modulated at the midpoint P1. The light intensity of P2a is small. Accordingly, the voltage of the signal S1 at this time is smaller than the voltage of the first reference signal S2, and the sign of the signal S3 is positive. Since the positive sign signal S3 is added to the voltage of the second reference signal S6 and output as the bias signal A2, the bias voltage becomes higher than V1, so that the deviation of the operating point of the
[0019]
On the other hand, when the modulation curve W1 shown in FIG. 4 is shifted leftward to become the modulation curve W3, the operating point corresponding to the bias voltage V1 is compared with the light intensity of the branched light B2 modulated at the middle point P1. The light intensity of P3a is large. Accordingly, the voltage of the signal S1 at this time is larger than the voltage of the first reference signal S2, and the sign of the signal S3 is negative. The negative sign signal S3 is added to the voltage of the second reference signal S6 and is output as the bias signal A2, so that the bias voltage becomes smaller than V1, so that the deviation of the operating point of the
In this way, the differential voltage generated between the first reference signal S2 and the signal S1 is set to zero, that is, the light intensity of the branched light B2 corresponds to the light intensity at the operating point at the midpoint of the modulation curve. Thus, by controlling the bias signal A2, the operating point of the

Further, another method for determining the voltage of the first reference signal S2 will be described below. First, a bias signal A2 is obtained by superimposing a low-frequency AC signal on a DC voltage generated by the separately provided variable voltage generator. Next, the DC voltage value generated by the variable voltage generator is changed so that the frequency component twice the superimposed low-frequency AC component included in the signal S1 becomes zero. The time average value of the voltage of the signal S1 at this time is set as the voltage of the first reference signal S2. This method uses the characteristic that the second-order distortion of the light intensity modulation becomes zero at the midpoint of the modulation curve, and the voltage of the first reference signal S2 corresponding to the midpoint of the modulation curve is set with high accuracy. can do.

【The invention's effect】
As described above, according to the present invention, since the light intensity modulator is installed in the thermostat and the temperature of the light intensity modulator is kept constant, the temperature of the light intensity modulator changes. Because the optical insertion loss does not change, the operating point of the optical intensity modulator can be stably held at the midpoint of the modulation curve regardless of the ambient temperature change, and stable without distortion. An optical signal having an optical output can be generated.
