【0048】

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a technology that is effective when applied to a power amplifier IC (semiconductor integrated circuit device) and an overcurrent detection circuit in the power amplifier IC, and is used, for example, in a power amplifier IC that drives a speaker of an audio system. And effective technology.
[0002]
[Prior art]
A current amplification IC such as a power amplifier IC used in a car audio system has a small output impedance. Therefore, when the output terminal is short-circuited to a power source or a ground point, a large current flows and the IC may be destroyed. . Therefore, in such a current amplification IC, a protection circuit including an overcurrent detection circuit is provided.
[0003]
Conventionally, as a method for detecting an overcurrent in a power amplifier IC, for example, a detection pad is provided adjacent to an output pad connected to the output terminal by a bonding wire, and another bonding is provided between the detection pad and the output terminal. There is a method of determining whether or not an overcurrent flows by detecting a potential difference generated in this detection pad when the output terminal is short-circuited by connecting with a wire. There is also a method of detecting an overcurrent by detecting a voltage drop generated in a predetermined aluminum wiring inside the IC when an output terminal is short-circuited and an overcurrent flows.
[0004]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, since the impedance of the bonding wire and aluminum wiring has a large process variation, the above-described method for detecting an overcurrent by detecting the voltage drop due to the resistance of the bonding wire or aluminum wiring is to perform accurate detection. Since trimming of the resistance value or the like is necessary, there is a problem that the number of processes increases.
[0005]
An object of the present invention is to provide a technique capable of detecting an overcurrent with high accuracy by a circuit designed with a relatively rough constant, and thereby performing a reliable overcurrent protection.
[0006]
The above and other objects and features of the present invention will be apparent from the description of this specification and the accompanying drawings.
[0007]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
Of the inventions disclosed in this application, the outline of typical ones will be briefly described as follows.
[0008]
That is, in a power amplifier having a feedback path that applies negative feedback from the last stage output circuit to the first stage differential amplifier circuit, the voltage fed back from the last stage output circuit to the first stage differential amplifier circuit and the input to the last stage output circuit And a comparison circuit for comparing the voltage fed back from the output circuit at the final stage to the first-stage differential amplifier circuit with a predetermined reference voltage. Based on the above, the overcurrent of the output terminal is detected and the protection circuit is operated to prevent the overcurrent.
[0009]
Specifically, a power amplifier circuit configured to negatively feed back the output voltage of the last stage output circuit to the first stage differential amplifier circuit, and an input terminal for taking in an input signal to the power amplifier circuit from the outside And an output terminal for taking out the output signal of the power amplifier circuit to the outside, a feedback voltage from the output circuit to the first stage differential amplifier circuit and an output of the amplifier circuit in the previous stage of the output circuit A first comparison means for comparing the voltages; a second comparison means for comparing the feedback voltage from the output circuit to the first-stage differential amplifier circuit with a predetermined reference voltage; and a comparison result of these comparison means. Thus, an overcurrent detection circuit for detecting an overcurrent flowing through the output terminal and a protection circuit for preventing an overcurrent flowing through the output terminal based on a detection signal of the overcurrent detection circuit are provided.
[0010]
According to the above-mentioned means, the current flowing in the bonding wire and the aluminum wiring that are easily affected by process variations is not detected, and the presence or absence of overcurrent is determined using the basic operation of the amplifier. A comparison circuit designed with rough constants can detect an overcurrent with high accuracy, thereby ensuring reliable overcurrent protection.
[0011]
In particular, the present invention is effective when applied to a case where the output circuit at the final stage is a voltage-current amplification type amplifier circuit. This is because the voltage-current amplification type circuit has a small output impedance, and therefore, if the output terminal is short-circuited to the power source or the ground point, a large current may flow and the IC may be destroyed.
[0012]
The overcurrent detection circuit is configured to output, as a detection signal, a signal corresponding to an exclusive OR of the output of the first comparison unit and the output of the first comparison unit. Thus, a desired overcurrent detection signal can be generated and output only by providing a relatively simple logic circuit.
[0013]
Further, the overcurrent detection circuit is configured to have a dead zone in which the output does not change with respect to an input signal at a level near the amplitude center of the input signal. As a result, malfunction of the overcurrent detection circuit and the protection circuit when the power amplifier is normal can be prevented.
[0014]
Further, the power amplifier IC configured as described above, an audio signal source that supplies an audio signal to the input terminal of the power amplifier IC, and the audio signal that is connected to the output terminal is amplified by the power amplifier IC. In an audio system including a speaker driven by a signal, IC destruction due to overcurrent can be prevented in advance, and a system with few failures can be realized.

[0024]
On the other hand, in the case of an abnormality such as a Vcc short circuit in which the output terminal is short-circuited to the power supply voltage Vcc or a GND short circuit in which the output terminal is short-circuited to the ground potential GND, as shown in FIG. 3, the potential a at the point A is equal to the input voltage Vin. Regardless, it is fixed at the power supply voltage Vcc (when Vcc is short-circuited) or the ground potential GND (when GND is short-circuited). Further, the potential b at the point B is also clamped to a potential b1 slightly lower than the power supply voltage Vcc and a potential b2 slightly higher than the ground potential GND over almost the entire input voltage Vin. Note that the potential at point B indicated by the dotted line has a staircase waveform because the output voltage Vout of the output

4 and 5 show the output waveforms of the comparison circuit 41 and the comparison circuit 42 when the potentials at the points A and B of the power amplifier IC of the embodiment are as shown in FIG. Show. In FIGS. 4 and 5, the solid line indicates the normal output waveforms of the comparison circuit 41 and the comparison circuit 42, the dotted line indicates the output waveforms of the comparison circuit 41 and the comparison circuit 42 when the Vcc is short, and the chain line indicates the GND short. The output waveforms of the comparison circuit 41 and the comparison circuit 42 are shown.
[0026]
As is apparent from FIG. 5, in the power amplifier IC of the embodiment, the output of the comparison circuit 42 becomes high level when Vcc is short-circuited. Further, as is clear from FIG. 5, the output of the comparison circuit 41 becomes high level when GND is short-circuited. For this reason, the output of the

Here, as shown in FIG. 4 and FIG. 5, the ideal waveform is not the complete output of Vcc or GND at the normal time but takes an intermediate level as shown in FIGS. Therefore, if the characteristics of the comparison circuits 41 and 42 vary or the threshold levels of the two input terminals of the

FIG. 7 shows a specific circuit example of the overcurrent detection circuit.
[0030]
The overcurrent detection circuit shown in the figure is configured by integrating the functions of the comparison circuits 41 and 42 and the
[0031]
In FIG. 7, a pair of bipolar transistors Q1, Q2 and Q5, Q6 whose emitter ends are connected to each other via a resistor R1 or R3 constitutes the comparison circuit 41 in FIG. 1, and the emitter end is connected via a diode-connected transistor Q4. A pair of bipolar transistors Q2 and Q3 connected to each other and a pair of bipolar transistors Q5 and Q8 whose emitter ends are connected to each other via a diode-connected transistor Q7 constitute the comparison circuit 42 in FIG. , Q5 is applied with the potential at point A (output Vout), the base terminals of transistors Q1 and Q6 are applied with point B, and the base terminals of transistors Q3 and Q8 are applied with reference voltage Vcc / 2. .
[0032]
The combined output (exclusive OR output) of these two sets of comparison circuits is connected in series with the collector of the transistor Q12 whose base is connected to the connection node n1 between the transistor Q2 and its collector resistor R4, and the transistor Q5. The transistor Q9 is connected to the transistor Q9 connected to the transistor Q10 and the collector resistor R4 is connected to the node n2 of the transistor Q11.
[0033]
In FIG. 7, CC1 is a common constant current source connected to the emitter side of transistors Q1, Q2 and Q3, CC2 is a common constant current source connected to the emitter side of transistors Q5, Q6 and Q7, and R5 is This is a common collector resistance for the output transistors Q11 and Q12.
[0034]
Here, the operation of the circuit of FIG. 7 will be briefly described. The output terminal causes a Vcc short circuit, and the potentials at the points A and B of the circuit of FIG. 1 are as shown by the solid lines a1 and b1 in FIG. In this case, the base potential of the transistors Q1 and Q2 is sufficiently higher than the base potential (Vcc / 2) of Q3, so that the transistors Q1 and Q2 side are turned on in relation to Q3, but in the relation between Q1 and Q2, , Q1 is turned on because a1, which is the base potential of Q1, is sufficiently higher than b1.
[0035]
As a result, the current I1 of the constant current source CC1 flows through its collector resistance R2 with Q2, the base potential of the output transistor Q12 falls, the output transistor Q12 is turned on, and a high level signal is output from the output terminal OUT. . At this time, since the base potentials of Q5 and Q6 are sufficiently higher than the base potential (Vcc / 2) of Q8 in the relationship between the transistors Q5, Q6 and Q8, Q5 and Q6 are turned off, and the current of the constant current source CC2 I2 flows through Q8, and no current flows through the current mirrors Q9 and Q10. Therefore, the output transistor Q11 is off.
[0036]
When the output terminal causes a GND short and the potentials at points A and B of the circuit of FIG. 1 are as shown by the solid line a2 and dotted line b2 in FIG. 3, respectively, the base potentials of the transistors Q1 and Q2 Is sufficiently lower than the base potential (Vcc / 2) of Q3, and in relation to Q3, the transistors Q1 and Q2 are turned off, and the current I1 of the constant current source CC1 flows to Q3 and no current flows to the resistor R2. The base potential of the output transistor Q12 rises and the output transistor Q12 is turned off.
[0037]
However, at this time, in the relationship between the transistors Q5, Q6, and Q8, the base potential of Q5, Q6 is sufficiently lower than the base potential (Vcc / 2) of Q8, so the Q5, Q6 side is turned on, and in the relationship between Q5, Q6 Since the base potential a1 of Q5 is sufficiently lower than b1, Q5 is turned on. As a result, the current I2 of the constant current source CC2 flows to Q5, the current also flows to the current mirrors Q9, Q10 and the resistor R4, the base potential of the output transistor Q11 decreases, and Q11 is turned on. As a result, a high level signal is output from the output terminal OUT.
[0038]
When the circuit of FIG. 1 does not cause a Vcc short circuit or a GND short circuit, the potentials at point A and point B are substantially at the same level as shown in FIG. When such a signal enters the circuit of FIG. 7, when the potential at point A and point B is lower than Vcc / 2, Q1 and Q2 are turned off and Q3 is turned on in relation to Q3. Therefore, since the current I1 flows through Q3 and does not flow through the resistor R2, the output transistor Q12 is off. At this time, in the relationship between the transistors Q5, Q6 and Q8, the Q5 and Q6 sides are turned on. However, when the base potentials of Q5 and Q6 are almost the same, the resistor R3 is present, so that Q6 is easily turned on. Current I2 flows through Q6 and no current flows through the current mirrors Q9 and Q10. Therefore, the output transistor Q11 is also turned off. As a result, the output level of the output terminal OUT becomes low level (GND).
[0039]
In the case where the circuit of FIG. 1 has neither Vcc short-circuit nor GND short-circuit, and when the potentials of the points A and B at substantially the same level are higher than Vcc / 2, Q5 and Q6 are related to Q8. Since it is turned off and Q8 is turned on, the current I2 flows through Q8 and no current flows through the current mirrors Q9 and Q10. Therefore, the output transistor Q11 is off. At this time, in the relationship between the transistors Q1, Q2 and Q3, the Q1 and Q2 sides are turned on, but when the base potentials of Q1 and Q2 are almost the same, the resistor R1 is present, so that the Q2 is easily turned on. Current I1 flows through Q1, Q2 is turned off, and no current flows through the resistor R2, so the output transistor Q12 is also off. As a result, the output level of the output terminal OUT becomes low level (GND).
[0040]
In any of the above cases, when the potentials at points A and B are in the vicinity of Vcc / 2, the diode-connected transistors Q4 and Q7 are connected so that the base potentials of Q1 and Q2 are Q3. Unless the threshold potential of the diode is higher than the threshold voltage of the diode (Vcc / 2), current does not flow to the Q1 and Q2 sides, and the base potential of Q5 and Q6 is higher than that of Q8 Unless the voltage exceeds the threshold voltage of the diode, it operates so that no current flows to the Q1 and Q2 sides. That is, the transistors Q4 and Q7 operate so as to give a dead zone to the input of the potentials at the points A and B in the normal state.

FIG. 8 shows a specific circuit example of the protection circuit.
