Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing a fuel cell, and more particularly to a hydrophilization treatment of a membrane electrode assembly.
A technique for hydrophilizing the surface of the catalyst-supporting carbon by plasma irradiation or immersion in an aqueous solution containing hydrogen peroxide or an inorganic acid is known (Patent Document 1). Further, a technique is known in which plasma treatment is performed on the surface of a catalyst-supporting carbon to make the surface hydrophilic, and this surface-treated catalyst-supporting carbon is used for a catalyst layer (Patent Document 2). Furthermore, a solid polymer fuel cell is known in which at least one electrode catalyst layer surface in contact with the solid polymer electrolyte membrane is given a hydrophilic group by surface treatment (oxygen plasma etching) (Patent Document 3). ).
However, in the methods of Patent Documents 1 and 2, since the catalyst layer and subsequently the membrane electrode assembly are prepared using the catalyst-supported carbon subjected to the hydrophilic treatment, the hydrophilic carbon surface and the hydrophobic main chain are formed. The compatibility with the electrolyte resin is poor and the carbon surface cannot be sufficiently covered. In such a case, in the dry state where the moisture content in the fuel cell is low, the portion of the carbon surface that is not covered with the electrolyte resin is wetted with water, and the dry-up of the catalyst layer there is suppressed, so the power generation performance of the fuel cell Will improve. On the other hand, in the wet state where the moisture content in the fuel cell is high, water accumulates too much on the carbon surface that is not covered with the electrolyte resin, and this accumulated water hinders the movement of the reaction gas (oxygen and hydrogen). There was a problem that the performance deteriorated. Further, in the method of Patent Document 3, the output is improved in a low load region, but the sulfonic acid group is detached from the electrolyte resin during oxygen plasma etching and the proton conductivity is lowered, so that a higher amount of protons must flow. There was a problem that performance deteriorated in the load range.
The present invention has been made to solve at least a part of the above-described problems, and aims to improve dry performance without reducing wet performance in all regions of high load and low load. .
SUMMARY An advantage of some aspects of the invention is to solve at least a part of the problems described above, and the invention can be implemented as the following forms or application examples.
[Application Example 1]
A method for producing a membrane electrode assembly for use in a fuel cell, wherein a catalyst layer is formed on an electrolyte membrane using a catalyst ink formed by mixing a hydrophobic catalyst-carrying carbon and an electrolyte resin; and And a step of hydrophilizing the electrolyte membrane on which the catalyst layer is formed with an acidic solution or an oxidizing agent.
When the hydrophilization treatment is performed in the state of the catalyst-carrying carbon, part of the catalyst-carrying carbon is hydrophilized, and the medium-carrying carbon cannot be almost covered with the electrolyte resin. Since the electrolyte membrane in which the layer is formed is subjected to a hydrophilic treatment, the periphery of the hydrophobic catalyst-carrying carbon can be almost covered with the electrolyte resin. As a result, it is possible to suppress permeation of the reaction gas (oxygen, hydrogen) due to water accumulation in the hydrophilized portion of the catalyst-supporting carbon, and in all areas of high load and low load, dry performance can be achieved without reducing wet performance. The performance can be improved.
[Application Example 2]
The method for producing a membrane / electrode assembly according to Application Example 1, wherein the acidic solution is nitric acid.
Nitric acid is preferred because it is both an acid and an oxidizing agent.
[Application Example 3]
In the method for producing a membrane / electrode assembly according to Application Example 1 or 2, the hydrophilization treatment is performed by immersing the electrolyte membrane on which the catalyst layer is formed in the acidic solution or the oxidizing agent solution. Manufacturing method of membrane electrode assembly.
According to this application example, since the electrolyte membrane in which the catalyst layer is formed is immersed, the entire electrolyte membrane in which the catalyst layer is formed can be hydrophilized.
The present invention can be realized in various forms, for example, in the form of a fuel cell membrane electrode assembly, a fuel cell manufacturing method, a membrane electrode assembly, a fuel cell, and the like.

The gas diffusion layers 132 and 133 are disposed on the outer surfaces of the catalyst layers 122 and 123, respectively. In this embodiment, as the gas diffusion layers 132 and 133, carbon cloth or carbon paper using a carbon nonwoven fabric can be used. The

In step S100, catalyst-supported carbon, an ionomer that is an electrolyte, and a solvent (a mixed solvent of water and ethanol) are mixed and stirred to prepare a catalyst ink.
FIG. 4 is an explanatory view illustrating the method for manufacturing the membrane electrode assembly of the present embodiment. When manufacturing the
This platinum-supporting carbon is a catalyst in which platinum and carbon powder (carbon) are mixed at a predetermined ratio, and platinum is supported on carbon particles. As the carbon powder, furnace black or acetylene black carbon black can be used. Since carbon black that has not been hydrophilized is hydrophobic, platinum-supported carbon is also hydrophobic. As an ionomer, for example, Nafion manufactured by DuPont can be used. Nafion is a registered trademark. As the mixed solvent, the amount was determined so that the ratio of the solid content in the produced catalyst ink would be a predetermined value. Here, the solid content means the total weight of the solid component of Nafion in the ionomer, platinum, and carbon powder.
After the above materials are mixed, the platinum-carrying carbon and ionomer in the mixed solvent are uniformly dispersed using the
After the catalyst ink is generated, the generated catalyst ink is directly applied on the
FIG. 5 is an explanatory view showing the hydrophilic treatment of the
FIG. 6 is an explanatory view schematically showing the state of platinum-supporting carbon in the present embodiment. In the platinum-supported carbon 122cp, platinum 122pt is supported on the
FIG. 7 is an explanatory diagram showing the structure of the ionomer. The ionomer 122io has a hydrophobic fluorocarbon main chain and a side chain having a fluorosulfonyl group (—SO 2 F) (also referred to as a “sulfonyl fluoride group”). In general, hydrophobic groups or hydrophilic groups are compatible with each other. When the ionomer 122io covers the platinum-carrying carbon 122cp, the platinum-carrying carbon 122cp is hydrophobic and therefore has good compatibility with the hydrophobic fluorocarbon main chain. For this reason, the ionomer 122io is arranged so that the main chain of the fluorine carbide is located on the platinum-supporting carbon 122cp and substantially covers the platinum-supporting carbon 122cp.
Returning to FIG. 6, the description will be continued. The platinum-supporting carbon 122cp (catalyst ink 122ink) covered with the ionomer 122io is applied to the

FIG. 9 is a flowchart from the production of the membrane electrode assembly of the comparative example to the evaluation of power generation. In step S200, the hydrophilic treatment is performed in the state of the catalyst-supported carbon before forming the catalyst ink. As the solution used for the hydrophilization treatment, in addition to nitric acid, an inorganic acid such as sulfuric acid, an acid having an oxidizing power such as hydrogen peroxide, and an oxidizing agent can be used as in step S150 of FIG. 3 of the embodiment. . In Steps S210 to S230, the
FIG. 10 is an explanatory view schematically showing the state of the platinum-supporting carbon of the comparative example. In the comparative example, since the hydrophilic treatment is performed before the catalyst ink 122ink is produced, the platinum-supported carbon 122cp is hydrophilic because part of the

B-5. Comparative Example 1:
A membrane electrode assembly was prepared according to the procedure of manufacturing the membrane electrode assembly of FIG. 4, and a fuel cell was prepared using the membrane electrode assembly. However, in Comparative Example 1, the platinum-supported carbon 122cp before producing the catalyst ink was immersed in a 1N nitric acid solution and subjected to a hydrophilic treatment, and then a catalyst ink was produced in the same manner as in Example 1. Thereafter, as in Example 2, a catalyst layer was directly formed on the

In Example 1, the one not subjected to hydrophilization treatment was designated as Comparative Example 2.
B-7. Measurement of power generation characteristics:
FIG. 12 is a table showing the power generation performance. Under the wet conditions, the power generation voltage was measured by generating power with a current density of 1.2 A / cm 2 with the temperature of the
When the hydrophilic treatment is performed after the production of the membrane / electrode assembly, the generated voltage is improved in both the dry condition and the wet condition as compared with the case where the hydrophilic treatment is not performed. The wet performance was almost the same, and there was no significant difference depending on the hydrophilization treatment time. However, as the dry treatment time was longer, the cell potential difference was larger, that is, the power generation performance was better. In addition, when the catalyst layer 122 (FIG. 2) was formed directly on the
FIG. 13 is an explanatory diagram showing IV performance of Example 1 and Comparative Example 2. The power generation conditions were such that the temperature of the
As described above, according to the present embodiment, the hydrophilization step is performed after the
In addition, according to the present embodiment, the hydrophilization step is not performed by plasma etching but by an inorganic acid or hydrogen peroxide, so that sulfonic acid groups (—SO 3 H) are not removed by plasma etching, and a high load region is obtained. In this case, sufficient proton conductivity can be maintained, and a decrease in power generation efficiency can be suppressed.
