Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a catalyst member, a carbon nanotube production apparatus, a carbon nanotube production method, and a carbon nanotube. More specifically, the present invention relates to a catalyst member used for manufacturing a carbon nanotube, a carbon nanotube manufacturing apparatus using the catalyst member, a carbon nanotube manufacturing method, and a carbon nanotube formed using the manufacturing method.
Carbon nanotubes are expected as a next-generation excellent conductive material used for power transmission and communication such as the Internet. Conventionally, catalytic CVD is used as a method for producing carbon nanotubes. Specifically, this is a method using, for example, iron nanoparticles as a catalyst. In the catalytic CVD method, iron nanoparticles are heat-treated while supplying a gas containing carbon and hydrogen such as hydrocarbons or alcohol (carbon source gas) to the iron nanoparticles. Then, the carbon source gas is decomposed into a carbon atom gas and a hydrogen atom gas in the vicinity of the iron nanoparticles, and the carbon atom gas contacts the surface of the iron nanoparticles. At this time, carbon nanotubes grow from the surface of the iron nanoparticle in contact with the carbon atom gas.
However, when the catalytic CVD method is used, carbon atoms supplied on the surface of the iron nanoparticles may cover the surface of the nanoparticles. Then, the iron nanoparticles do not act as a catalyst, the growth rate of the carbon nanotubes decreases, and the growth of the carbon nanotubes may stop. Specifically, since a thin film made of carbon is formed on the surface of the iron nanoparticles, the iron nanoparticles do not directly contact the carbon source gas. When the carbon source gas contacts and decomposes on the surface of the iron nanoparticles, and the carbon is solid-solved inside the iron nanoparticles, some of the carbon becomes supersaturated with respect to the iron nanoparticles. Of carbon is exposed as a carbon film on the iron surface. For this reason, a phenomenon in which a thin film as described above is formed occurs.
On the other hand, as disclosed in, for example, Japanese Journal of Applied Physics Vol. 46 (Non-Patent Document 1), aluminum oxide (alumina: Al 2 O 3 ) has been effective as a catalyst for growing carbon nanotubes. It has been known.
As described above, when the catalytic CVD method is used, there is a possibility that the growth rate of the carbon nanotubes is lowered or stopped midway. However, in order to suppress this, it is not easy to continuously grow carbon nanotubes using the catalytic CVD method. For example, in order to suppress the formation of a carbon thin film adhering to the surface of the iron nanoparticles, water is supplied simultaneously with the carbon source gas onto the surface of the iron nanoparticles. However, this water may destroy the formed carbon nanotubes and deteriorate the quality of the carbon nanotubes. That is, if the region in which the carbon source gas is supplied to the catalyst and the region in which the carbon nanotubes are grown are the same, there is a possibility that the above trade-off relationship is established. Therefore, it is preferable that the region for supplying the carbon source gas and the region for growing the carbon nanotubes are separate (independent).
For this reason, in recent years, a technique for forming carbon nanotubes has been proposed in place of the catalytic CVD method called carbon permeation method. The carbon permeation method is a method of forming carbon nanotubes using a system in which a region to which carbon source gas is supplied and a region in which carbon nanotubes are grown are separated by a separator made of, for example, silver. Inside the separator, a filament formed in an elongated shape so as to penetrate the inside of the separator is formed. The filament is formed of iron as a catalyst. A region where iron is somewhat exposed is formed on the outer surface of the separator so as to be continuous (contact) with the filament. When a gas containing carbon and hydrogen such as the hydrocarbons and alcohols (carbon source gas) is supplied to the region where the iron is exposed to the outside, the carbon atoms and hydrogen atoms of the carbon source gas are decomposed. Is done. Carbon atoms enter the region where iron is exposed to the outside. Then, the carbon atoms dissolved in the iron penetrate through the iron filament due to the diffusion phenomenon, escape from the side opposite to the region to which the carbon source gas is supplied, to the outside of the separator and grow as carbon nanotubes.
However, there is a problem that the action of iron as a catalyst for decomposing carbon source gas is not strong. For this reason, if carbon source gas is not fully decomposed | disassembled in the area | region where iron was exposed outside, the quantity of the carbon atom diffused inside iron may decrease. As a result, the growth rate of the carbon nanotube may decrease. Therefore, it is desirable to increase the efficiency with which the carbon source gas is decomposed.
The present invention has been made in view of the above problems. The object is to provide a catalyst member that increases the efficiency with which carbon source gas is decomposed and increases the growth rate of carbon nanotubes to enable continuous growth of high-quality carbon nanotubes. Moreover, it is providing the carbon nanotube formed using the manufacturing apparatus of a carbon nanotube provided with the said catalyst member, the manufacturing method of a carbon nanotube, and the manufacturing method of the said carbon nanotube.
The catalyst member according to the present invention is in contact with a base body made of silver or a silver alloy, an iron filament disposed so as to penetrate the inside of the base body, and a part of one end of the iron filament. And disposed alumina.
The catalyst member is used for forming carbon nanotubes using a carbon permeation method. That is, the catalyst member is used as a separator between a region for supplying the carbon source gas and a region for growing carbon nanotubes. If alumina is disposed in the region where the carbon source gas is supplied, the carbon source gas is decomposed with high efficiency. This is because alumina has a stronger action as a catalyst for decomposing carbon and hydrogen in the carbon source gas than iron. For this reason, carbon that has been decomposed with high efficiency by alumina dissolves in the iron from the portion of the iron in contact with the alumina, and further diffuses into the iron filament that comes into contact with the carbon at high speed. Can be continuously grown. If alumina is used for the catalyst member in this way, carbon nanotubes can be grown with high efficiency by the carbon permeation method.
In the carbon nanotube manufacturing apparatus provided with the above-described catalyst member, a region for supplying a carbon source gas and a region for growing carbon nanotubes are arranged independently. For this reason, for example, substances that cause deterioration of the quality of the growing carbon nanotubes, such as water and gas supplied to the region for supplying the carbon source gas, are less likely to be mixed into the grown carbon nanotubes. Therefore, the quality of the formed carbon nanotube can be improved. As described above, when alumina is used as the catalyst, decomposition of the carbon source gas is promoted, so that the efficiency with which carbon nanotubes are formed can be increased. As described above, the manufacturing apparatus can grow high-quality carbon nanotubes with high efficiency. In other words, the carbon nanotube production method using the catalyst member can provide high-quality carbon nanotubes with high efficiency.
The catalyst member of the present invention increases the growth rate of carbon nanotubes and enables continuous growth of high-quality carbon nanotubes.
Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described with reference to the drawings. In each embodiment, elements having the same function are denoted by the same reference numerals, and the description thereof will not be repeated unless particularly necessary.
(Embodiment 1)
A
As shown in FIG. 1, the
Further, as shown in the cross-sectional view of FIG. 2, four
The alumina film 7 is disposed on the gas supply side
Next, the manufacturing method of the carbon nanotube using the said catalyst member is demonstrated. As shown in the flowchart of FIG. 3, a step of preparing a catalyst member (S10) is first performed. The step (S10) is a step of forming the
Specifically, as shown in FIG. 4, for example, an

Each processing described above is similar to a process of bundling a plurality of superconducting material powders filled into a silver pipe to form a superconducting wire, thereby forming a multicore. For this reason, each processing described above is a processing technique with high processing efficiency and excellent mass productivity.
The insertion process of the
The
Subsequently, the
Then, as shown in FIG. 9, an alumina film is formed. This alumina film is formed on either the
The
In order to form the
When the
Carbon nanotubes are formed on the
The
In FIG. 11, the
In FIG. 11, a carbon source gas containing carbon and hydrogen for growing carbon nanotubes is supplied from a carbon source
When the carbon atom gas collects and comes into contact with a part of the surface of the
As described above, in the first embodiment, the carbon permeation method is used as a method for manufacturing the
Further, the presence of the alumina film 7 (alumina film 25) causes the carbon source gas to be decomposed faster than when the alumina film 7 (alumina film 25) does not exist. Since the carbon atoms dissolved in the iron are diffused quickly, the growth rate of the
Here, the carbon source gas 11 (from the carbon source gas supply device 35) decomposed by the alumina film 7 (alumina film 25) is supplied so as to gather in the vicinity of the surface of the iron filament 3 (iron wire 21). Is preferred. For this reason, it is preferable that the carbon source gas 11 can contact a part of the surface of the iron filament 3 (iron wire 21). Therefore, as shown in FIGS. 1 and 11, the iron filament 3 (iron wire 21) is partially covered with the alumina film 7 (alumina film 25) outside the base body 1 (silver pipe 23) as shown in FIG. It is preferable that it is exposed. Then, if the decomposed carbon atom gas gathers and comes into contact with the exposed surface of the
As described above, as shown in FIG. 8, it is preferable to expose the end of the
In this case, if the carbon atom gas contacts the surface of the exposed iron 5, the exposed iron 5 is in contact with the
That is, in FIG. 1, the end of the
From the above, it is only necessary that there is an exposed surface outside the
(Embodiment 2)
The
Thus, the exposed region of the end of the
The second embodiment of the present invention is different from the first embodiment of the present invention only in each point described above. That is, the configuration, conditions, procedures, effects, and the like that have not been described above for the second embodiment of the present invention are all in accordance with the first embodiment of the present invention.
(Embodiment 3)
The
As described above, the alumina film formed on the gas supply side
In other words, even if the porous alumina film 9 covers the entire surface of the end portion of the
The porous alumina film 9 is formed by a method called anodic oxidation. If the porous alumina film 9 is used, the carbon raw material gas is decomposed into carbon and hydrogen in the porous alumina film 9 where alumina is present, that is, in the non-porous region, and the decomposed carbon atom gas is present in the pores in the vicinity thereof. It contacts the surface of the
In the catalyst member 40 as well, for example, similarly to the catalyst member 30, the end portion of the
The third embodiment of the present invention is different from the first and second embodiments of the present invention only in the points described above. That is, the configuration, conditions, procedures, effects, and the like that have not been described above for the third embodiment of the present invention are all in accordance with the first and second embodiments of the present invention.
A carbon nanotube was prototyped according to the first embodiment of the present invention described above. Specifically, as a step (S10) of preparing the catalyst member of FIG. 3, first, an
Next, as shown in FIG. 7, the
Further, only the silver existing in the region of a certain depth from the main surface formed by the cut cross section of the cut member is removed by etching, and the
Using a film forming method in which an alumina thin film and an iron thin film are simultaneously formed on one main surface (for example, the
Using the catalyst member A, carbon nanotubes were grown by the carbon permeation method using the
Then, 3 mm long carbon nanotubes grew from the upper end of the
For comparison with the catalyst member A, a catalyst member B that is formed under the same conditions as the catalyst member A described above, but does not have an alumina thin film and an iron thin film formed on the
When carbon nanotubes grown from each of the two types of catalyst members A and B were evaluated using Raman spectroscopy, a G band peak representing a graphene layer of carbon atoms was observed in both. And from the carbon nanotube grown from the catalyst member A, the peak of the D band meaning a defect was hardly observed. Therefore, carbon nanotubes having almost no defects can be formed by using the above-described method for producing carbon nanotubes. This is presumably because the use of the carbon permeation method reduces the possibility of impurities being mixed into the growing carbon nanotube, as in the case of using the catalytic CVD method, for example.
