However, some conventional dye-sensitized solar cells using metal complex dyes achieve a somewhat high open-circuit voltage, but at the same time, in terms of the efficiency of photocurrent generated by long-wavelength sunlight. A sufficient level could not be achieved.
Accordingly, a main object of the present invention is to provide a dye-sensitized solar cell having a high open-circuit voltage and capable of generating a photocurrent with high efficiency with respect to long-wavelength sunlight.

This hydrophobic group may be bonded to the oligopyridine skeleton via a divalent organic group represented by the following chemical formula (3), (4) or (5).
The metal complex dye according to the present invention preferably further comprises an electron donating group coordinated to a metal atom. The electron donating group is preferably an isothiocyanate group.

The In the dye-sensitized solar cell of the present invention, leakage current due to reverse electron transfer is suppressed. Moreover, the dye-sensitized solar cell according to the present invention is also excellent in terms of durability.
Hereinafter, preferred embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail. However, the present invention is not limited to the following embodiments.
The metal complex dye according to the present embodiment has a ligand containing an oligopyridine skeleton represented by the general formula (1), a hydrophobic group, and a carboxyl group. Such a ligand coordinates to a metal atom to form a metal complex.
The ligand having an oligopyridine skeleton is represented, for example, by the following general formula (10). In the formula (10), each Z independently represents a hydrogen atom, a group having a hydrophobic group, or a carboxyl group, and a plurality of Z in the same molecule may be the same or different. At least one is a group having a hydrophobic group, and at least one of a plurality of Z in the same molecule is a carboxyl group. n is 1 or 2. Z is preferably para to the nitrogen atom.
Z in the formula (10) is, for example, a group represented by the following general formula (2). In the formula (2), L represents a single bond or a divalent organic group, and R represents a hydrophobic group. The hydrophobic group R is, for example, an alkyl group having 3 or more carbon atoms that may have a substituent.
When the hydrophobic group R is an alkyl group, the carbon number thereof is preferably 3 or more, more preferably 9 or more. By introducing the hydrophobic group, it is possible to suppress the iodine ion dye and the titanium oxide approach of the electrolytic solution, and to prevent the electrons injected into the titanium oxide from leaking into the electrolytic solution. As a result, the open-circuit voltage further increases. Furthermore, conventionally, when moisture is present in the electrolyte, there has been a problem that the durability is low, but by introducing a hydrophobic group into the dye, the moisture is prevented from approaching the dye, and the dye deteriorates. Can also be prevented. As a result, durability can be improved. When the number of carbon atoms increases, more excellent effects can be obtained in terms of improving open-circuit voltage and improving durability. The number of carbon atoms of the hydrophobic group R is preferably 30 or less. If the number of carbon atoms becomes excessively large, the dye molecules become too large, and when the dye is adsorbed, a void (gap) is formed between the dye and the dye, so that the electron transfer from the titanium oxide to the electrolyte (leakage current) Increase) and the open-circuit voltage tends to decrease. The alkyl group as the hydrophobic group may be linear or branched, and may contain a cyclic structure. Examples of the substituent bonded to the alkyl group include a phenyl group.
When L is a divalent organic group, the hydrophobic group R is bonded to the oligopyridine skeleton via the divalent organic group L. The divalent organic group may be, for example, a group represented by the above formula (3), (4) or (5). By using these organic groups, it is possible to synthesize a ligand into which a hydrophobic group has been introduced more easily.
Specific examples of suitable ligands include compounds represented by the following general formula (11), (12) or (13). Z in these formulas has the same meaning as Z in formula (10) and preferred embodiments thereof. The compounds of the formulas (11) and (12) are tridentate ligands having a terpyridine skeleton, and the compound of the formula (13) is a tetradentate ligand having a tetrapyridine skeleton.
The compound having the terpyridine skeleton or tetrapyridine skeleton as described above can be appropriately synthesized by combining ordinary synthesis reactions, as will be understood by those skilled in the art.

Among these, Fe, Ru, and Os are preferable. Of these, Ru is particularly preferable. In addition, in the case of the metal complex dye which has an electric charge, it is normally used as a photosensitizer in the state of a salt with the counter ion.

An example of the iodine compound is propylmethylimidazolium iodide (hereinafter abbreviated as PMII).
The electrolytic solution may further contain a nonionic organic compound. The saturated hydrocarbon group may be linear or branched, but is more preferably linear. Further, the saturated hydrocarbon group may have a hydroxyl group or an aldehyde group, but more preferably does not have a hydroxyl group or an aldehyde group.

Next, a metal complex dye as a photosensitizer is adsorbed (chemical adsorption, physical adsorption or deposition) on the formed semiconductor layer. Adsorption can be performed, for example, by a method of immersing the semiconductor layer in a solution containing a sensitizing dye.

The counter electrode CE (carbon electrode) is a porous electrode formed using, for example, carbon black particles, graphite particles, and conductive oxide particles such as anatase-type titanium oxide particles as constituent materials. An electrolyte is held in the pores of the porous counter electrode CE (carbon electrode). In the counter electrode CE, which is a porous carbon electrode, for example, catalyst fine particles such as Pt fine particles may be dispersed and supported from the viewpoint of allowing the speed of the electrode reaction to proceed more rapidly.
The counter electrode CE (carbon electrode) also has a bowl-shaped edge for adhering and covering a part of the porous body layer PS that covers the back surface F22 of the

SC394 showed an intermediate absorption spectrum of tetrapyridine and bipyridine in the long wavelength region, and light absorption in the long wavelength region could be confirmed as compared with N719 and Z907 of bipyridine. The molar extinction coefficient and absorption spectrum of SC394 were similar to that of N749, which is a black dye. SC310 was confirmed to have light absorption in a longer wavelength region than that of the black dye N749.

(Production and evaluation of dye-sensitized solar cells)
A titania paste containing titania (TiO 2 ) nanoparticles (particle diameter of about 20 nm) was applied to a glass substrate with a transparent conductive film (TCO) by a screen printing method. The coating film was dried at 150 ° C. and further baked by heating at 450 ° C. for 30 minutes to form a titania layer of nanoparticles. Further, a titania layer composed of titania particles having a particle diameter of 400 nm was laminated by the same method to form a titania electrode. The obtained titania electrode was immersed in a titanium tetrachloride (TiCl 4 ) aqueous solution for surface treatment for 60 minutes, washed, and then fired again by heating at 450 ° C. for 30 minutes.
The surface-treated titania electrode was immersed in a solution (concentration: 3 mM) in which each dye was dissolved in a mixed solvent of acetonitrile and t-butanol (volume ratio 50%). N749, SC385, SC394 or Z907 was used as the dye. After soaking, it was washed with acetonitrile to obtain a titania electrode on which the dye was adsorbed.
An alcohol solution of chloroplatinic acid is applied to a glass substrate with a TCO film, and the coating film is baked at 400 ° C. to produce a transparent counter electrode (counter electrode) formed from platinum nanoparticles (particle diameter: several nm). did. The obtained counter electrode and titania electrode were arranged opposite to each other, and these were bonded together through a seal (thermoplastic polyolefin resin). An electrolyte was injected from the injection hole between the titania electrode and the counter electrode, and the injection hole was sealed. As an electrolytic solution, a solution in which iodine, lithium iodide (0.3M) and N-methylbenzimidazole (0.5M) were dissolved in 3-methoxypropionitrile (MPN) was used.
The current-voltage characteristics in the dark of a solar cell using N749, SC385, or Z907 were measured. FIG. 5 is a graph showing measurement results of current-voltage characteristics. The current after applying the bias voltage is a leakage current resulting from the back electron transfer from the TCO film or titania electrode to the electrolyte. The leakage current decreased in the order of SC385 and Z907 having an alkyl chain, compared to N749 having no alkyl chain. That is, the effect of preventing reverse electron transfer due to the alkyl chain of the dye was recognized.
Furthermore, 1 sun light (pseudo sunlight, AM-1.5) of a solar simulator was irradiated to the solar cell, and the open circuit voltage (V oc ) of the solar cell at that time was measured. The measurement results are shown in the following table. SC385 and Z907 having an alkyl chain showed larger V oc than N749 having no alkyl chain.
For solar cells using SC385, SC394, or Z907, the wavelength dependence of quantum efficiency was measured. The measurement results are shown in FIG. By using SC385 or SC394, it was confirmed that power generation on the longer wavelength side was possible compared to Z907.
Experimental values of HOMO and LUMO energy levels were determined for SC385, SC394, Z907, and N749, respectively (FIG. 7). The energy level A of HOMO was estimated by a photoelectron spectrometer (AC-2, manufactured by Riken Keiki Co., Ltd.). From the absorption spectrum of the dye, the energy gap between HOMO and LUMO was estimated from the position of the absorption edge, and the LUMO energy level B was determined. As the dye for the dye-sensitized solar cell, the LUMO energy level is lower than the
A counter-type solar cell was produced in the same manner as described above except that a molten salt electrolyte containing propylmethylimidazolium iodide (PMII) and N-methylbenzimidazole was used as the electrolyte. The solar cell obtained was irradiated with 1 sun light (pseudo sunlight, AM-1.5) of a solar simulator under an environment of 60 ° C., and the change in conversion efficiency at that time was evaluated. The results are shown in FIG. Solar cells using SC385 showed very good durability. In the case of a dye containing an alkyl chain, an advantage that the effect of improving the initial efficiency at the time of operation at 60 ° C. was great was recognized.
