Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an optical fiber terminal structure, and more particularly to an optical fiber terminal structure having a ferrule.
Conventionally, it is known to connect optical fibers using a connector (connector connection). When performing connector connection, as generally disclosed in Patent Document 1 or the like, a ferrule is attached to each end of an optical fiber to be connected to hold the optical fiber, and the connector is attached to the ferrule. By holding the optical fiber using the ferrule in this way, it is possible to connect the connector without bending the thin and flexible optical fiber.
If an optical fiber is fixed in the ferrule insertion hole using a relatively hard adhesive such as an epoxy resin adhesive, stress is applied from the adhesive to the optical fiber due to shrinkage of the adhesive during curing. As a result, transmission loss may occur at the fiber end.
Further, if a polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber (hereinafter referred to as “polarization-maintaining PCF”) described in
The present invention has been made in view of such points, and an object of the present invention is to provide an optical fiber terminal structure capable of preventing transmission loss in an optical fiber even when the optical fiber is held by a ferrule. There is.
The optical fiber terminal structure of the present invention includes an optical fiber, a ferrule that passes through the optical fiber and holds the optical fiber, and an elastic member that is present in the ferrule insertion hole and fixes the optical fiber to the ferrule. And.
In the above configuration, the optical fiber is fixed to the ferrule via the elastic member. Therefore, even if the optical fiber is fixed to the ferrule, it is possible to reduce the stress on the optical fiber, and as a result, it is possible to prevent transmission loss from occurring at the end of the optical fiber.
Here, the elastic member is made of a material whose Young's modulus and hardness are smaller than the Young's modulus and hardness of an epoxy resin adhesive generally used as an adhesive, respectively. Preferably, the elastic member is made of a material having a Young's modulus of 0.001 MPa to 2500 MPa and a hardness of D10 to D50. More preferably, the elastic member is made of a material having a Young's modulus of 0.001 MPa to 1000 MPa and a hardness of D10 to D35. More preferably, the elastic member is made of a material having a Young's modulus of 0.001 MPa to 100 MPa and a hardness of D10 to D25.
In the optical fiber terminal structure of the present invention, the optical fiber may further include a covering portion that covers a portion of the optical fiber that extends outward from the ferrule, and an adhesive that bonds the covering portion and the outer surface of the ferrule. preferable. Thereby, even if it is a case where the elastic member does not have the outstanding adhesive force, it can prevent reliably that an optical fiber slips out of a ferrule.
In a preferred embodiment described below, the optical fiber is a polarization maintaining photonic crystal fiber.
According to the present invention, even if a ferrule is attached to an optical fiber, the stress applied to the optical fiber can be kept small, and as a result, transmission loss can be suppressed.
Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the drawings. The present invention is not limited to the following embodiment.
Embodiment 1 of the Invention
In Embodiment 1, a polarization maintaining PCF is taken as an example of a specific example of an optical fiber, and an optical
FIG. 1 is a cross-sectional view of an optical
An optical
The
A portion other than both end portions of the polarization maintaining PCF 2 is covered with a first covering
The
Here, when the size of the optical fiber core wire 1 is shown, the fiber diameter of the
The
The
In the following, the advantage of holding the
When the polarization maintaining PCF is fixed to the ferrule using an epoxy resin adhesive, the polarization maintaining PCF can be firmly fixed to the ferrule. However, stress is often applied to the polarization-maintaining PCF from the epoxy resin adhesive when the resin is cured. As a result, if a ferrule is attached to the polarization-maintaining PCF using an epoxy resin-based adhesive, transmission loss Generation and a decrease in polarization maintaining function. Furthermore, as described above, the polarization extinction ratio is reduced by the stress in the portion where the pores (large pores or pores) are sealed.
Further, if the polarization maintaining PCF is held by the ferrule without using an adhesive or a filler, it is possible to prevent transmission loss and deterioration of the polarization maintaining function. However, in this case, the polarization maintaining PCF cannot be fixed to the ferrule. Therefore, there is a risk that the polarization-maintaining PCF may be detached from the ferrule during use or the like, causing a problem in use.
On the other hand, the
Further, unlike the case where the polarization maintaining PCF is fixed to the ferrule without using an adhesive or a filler, the
Note that the presence or absence of a decrease in the polarization maintaining function can be determined by measuring the polarization extinction ratio as described in Examples described later.
Next, the manufacturing method of the
First, the optical fiber core wire 1 is prepared, and the first and
Next, the exposed end portion (for example, about 100 μm from the tip) of the
Subsequently, the
Then, the
As described above, in the optical
Further, in the optical
<<
FIG. 3 is a cross-sectional view of an optical
Unlike the optical
The adhesive 19 is an adhesive for adhering a portion of the optical fiber core wire 1 that is not inserted through the
Such an optical
Note that the adhesive 19 in the present embodiment can be used without particular limitation whether it is a UV curable resin or a thermosetting resin, but it is more light to use a UV curable resin than a thermosetting resin. This is preferable because the manufacturing time of the fiber terminal structure can be shortened.
<< Other Embodiments >>
The present invention may have the following configurations for the first and second embodiments.
The optical fiber is a polarization maintaining PCF, but is not limited to the polarization maintaining PCF. If an optical fiber other than the polarization maintaining PCF is fixed to the ferrule using an elastic member, transmission loss can be suppressed as described above.
In this example, the polarization extinction ratio was measured to investigate the polarization maintaining function of the polarization maintaining PCF. Specifically, four types of resins shown in Table 1 were prepared, and the polarization extinction ratio when the optical fiber was fixed to the ferrule using each resin was measured. In Experiment 1, the Young's modulus and hardness of the resin used for fixing the polarization-maintaining PCF to the ferrule were optimized. In
In addition, resin of an Example is GE Toshiba Silicones product number XE14-D62, and was resin which has silicone resin as a main component. No. STYCAST2651MM, and Comparative Example 3 was No. XOC-03H2 manufactured by Kyoritsu Chemical Industry Co., Ltd.
(Experiment 1)
In Experiment 1, the polarization extinction ratio was measured after manufacturing a polarization-maintaining PCF with a ferrule using the resins of Examples, Comparative Examples 1 and 2 among the resins shown in Table 1.
1. Production of Polarization-Maintaining PCF with Ferrule A polarization-maintaining PCF and a ferrule were prepared, and the ferrule was fixed to both ends of the polarization-maintaining PCF according to the method described in the first embodiment. At this time, in the process of thermosetting the resin, the heating was performed at a heating temperature and a heating time that can cure each resin 100%. Specifically, the heating temperature and heating time are 30 minutes at 150 ° C. when the resin of the example is used, and 60 minutes at 100 ° C. when the resin of the comparative example 1 is used. In the case of using this resin, it was 60 minutes at 80 ° C.
2. Measurement Method of Polarization Extinction Ratio The polarization extinction ratio was measured using an apparatus having a laser device, an incident side polarizer, an optical fiber with a ferrule, an output side polarizer, and an intensity measuring device. In this apparatus, the laser beam from the laser apparatus is arranged so as to pass through the incident side polarizer and propagate through the ferruled optical fiber, and then pass through the output side polarizer and enter the intensity measuring device. As the laser light, light that actually propagates in the polarization maintaining PCF, that is, laser light having a wavelength of 640 nm and laser light having a wavelength of 405 nm were used.
Next, the polarization plane of the incident-side polarizer and the polarization plane of the exit-side polarizer were made parallel to each other, and the intensity I // of the light that passed through the exit-side polarizer was measured with an intensity meter.
Subsequently, only the polarization plane of the output side polarizer was rotated by 90 degrees, and the intensity I の of the light that passed through the output side polarizer was measured with an intensity measuring device. Then, the polarization extinction ratio, that is, the ratio between I // and I ⊥ was obtained.
In this embodiment, the polarization extinction ratio when laser light is incident from one end (A end) of the optical fiber with ferrule and propagated to the other end (B end), and the laser light from the B end to the A end We measured the polarization extinction ratio when propagating to
3. Results and Discussion Tables 2 to 4 show the measurement results. Table 2 shows the results when the polarization-maintaining PCF was fixed to the ferrule using the resin of the example. Tables 3 and 4 show the polarization using the resins of Comparative Examples 1 and 2, respectively. This is a result when the holding PCF is fixed to the ferrule.
Here, in Tables 2 to 4, the A end is a polarization extinction ratio measured when the laser light is propagated from the A end to the B end, and the B end is the laser light from the B end. This is the polarization extinction ratio measured when propagating to the A end. In each column, the numerical value before the slash is a polarization extinction ratio when a 640-nm laser beam is incident, and the numerical value after the slash is a value when a 405-nm laser beam is incident. Polarization extinction ratio.
As shown in Table 2, when the resin of the example was used, the polarization extinction ratio was 20 dB or more. On the other hand, as shown in Tables 3 and 4, when the resins of Comparative Examples 1 and 2 were used, the polarization extinction ratio was 20 dB or more when 640 nm light was incident, but 405 nm light was incident. It was less than 20 dB.
In general, if the polarization extinction ratio is 20 dB or more, it can be considered to function as a polarization maintaining optical fiber. Therefore, if the polarization maintaining PCF is attached to the ferrule using the resin of the example, the polarization maintaining function can be maintained. However, if the polarization maintaining PCF is attached to the ferrule using the resins of Comparative Examples 1 and 2, the incident light is incident. The polarization maintaining function could not be maintained depending on the wavelength.
Further, when Comparative Example 1 (Table 3) and Comparative Example 2 (Table 4) were compared, Comparative Example 2 showed a more significant decrease in polarization maintaining function. From the above, it was found that as the Young's modulus and hardness are smaller, the decrease in polarization maintaining function can be suppressed.

1. Curing conditions Under curing conditions 1, the resin of Comparative Example 3 was cured at 100 degrees. The curing temperature and curing time for curing 100% of this resin were 100 degrees and 45 to 90 minutes, respectively.

2. Measurement of polarization extinction ratio The polarization extinction ratio was measured using the same apparatus as in Example 1 according to the same measurement method.
3. Results and Discussion Table 5 shows the measurement results of the polarization extinction ratio. In Table 5, the meanings of the A end, the B end, and the slash are the same as those in Tables 2 to 4.
As shown in Table 5, when the curing conditions 1 to 4 were compared, it was found that the higher the heating temperature, the lower the polarization extinction ratio.
In the
In the
Thus, when the polarization maintaining PCF is fixed to the ferrule using the resin of Comparative Example 3, the polarization extinction ratio cannot be set to 20 dB or more at the temperature at which the resin is completely cured, and the polarization extinction ratio is Under the condition of 20 dB or more, the resin could not be completely cured.
