Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an organic electroluminescence display device (organic EL display device).
The organic EL display device has a basic structure in which a light emitting layer made of an organic EL material is sandwiched between an anode and a cathode, and injects holes from the anode and electrons from the cathode into the light emitting layer, respectively. This is a display device that performs display using light emitted when electrons recombine in the light emitting layer. Organic EL materials are roughly classified into low-molecular types and high-molecular types. The anode is required to have a high work function in order to increase the injection efficiency of holes into the light emitting layer of the organic EL material, and the cathode is required to have a low work function in order to increase the efficiency of electron injection.
In a specific organic EL display device, the basic structure of the anode / light emitting layer / cathode described above is formed as one pixel on a substrate, and a plurality of thin film transistors (TFTs) are formed on the substrate corresponding to each pixel. By controlling the current flowing between the positive and negative electrodes of each pixel by these TFTs, the light emitted from the light emitting layer is controlled and displayed.
In such an organic EL display device, in a bottom emission type display device that extracts light from the light emitting layer from the anode side, the substrate on which the TFT is formed is made of a transparent material such as glass, and the anode has a high work function. In addition, since transparency is required, transparent conductive films such as indium oxide (In 2 O 3 ) films, SnO 2 films, ZnO films, etc., especially ITO films doped with Sn in In 2 O 3 films are used. Since the cathode requires only a low work function, for example, a laminated film in which an extremely thin LiF film, BaF 2 film, and CsF film disposed on the light emitting layer side is formed on an Al film is used. The anode is connected to the drain electrode of each TFT, and the cathode is connected to all pixels in common.
However, in the light extraction of the organic EL display device described above, since the TFT is formed on the transparent substrate on which the anode is disposed, the intensity of the light extracted by the light from the light emitting layer being blocked by these TFTs is reduced. To do.
Compensation for a decrease in light intensity can be dealt with by increasing the current value and / or the voltage value supplied between the positive and negative electrodes. However, when the current value and / or voltage value supplied between the positive and negative electrodes is increased, the organic EL material including the light emitting layer is deteriorated, and as a result, the lifetime of the organic EL display device is reduced.
In order to improve the light extraction efficiency, a top emission structure that extracts light from the opposite side of the TFT using a transparent cathode is effective. However, transparent conductive films such as an ITO film, an In 2 O 3 film, a SnO 2 film, and a ZnO film have a high work function of about 5 eV and are difficult to use as a cathode material.
The present invention includes a transparent conductive material containing at least one alkaline component selected from alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, and fluorides thereof, having a low work function transparent cathode, and extracting light from the cathode side. An object is to provide a possible organic EL display device.
According to the present invention, a substrate, a thin film transistor formed on the substrate, an anode formed on the substrate including the thin film transistor, a hole transport layer, a light emitting layer, and a cathode sequentially formed on the anode, An organic electroluminescence display device that extracts light from the cathode side,
The cathode is provided with an organic EL display device characterized in that the transparent conductive material contains at least one alkaline component selected from alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, and fluorides thereof.
According to the present invention, the transparent conductive material includes at least one alkaline component selected from alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, and fluorides thereof, and has a low work function, transparent cathode, and extracts light from the cathode side. The light extraction efficiency can be improved without increasing the current value and / or the voltage value supplied between the positive and negative electrodes because light can be extracted from the cathode side where there is no TFT that shields light. And a long-life organic EL display device can be provided.
Hereinafter, the organic EL display device according to the present invention will be described in detail.
The organic EL display device includes a thin film transistor formed on a substrate, an anode formed on the substrate including the thin film transistor, and a hole transport layer, a light emitting layer, and a cathode sequentially formed on the anode. The light is extracted from the cathode side, that is, the top emission type. The cathode includes at least one alkaline component selected from alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, and fluorides thereof in a transparent conductive material.
For example, a glass substrate or a transparent plastic film can be used as the substrate.
The anode is a reflective film made of a metal having a large work function such as palladium (Pd), platinum (Pt), nickel (Ni), molybdenum (Mo), or chromium (Cr), or the same metal or high reflection. A reflective film such as aluminum having a refractive index and a transparent conductive film such as an ITO film, an In 2 O 3 film, a SnO 2 film, and a ZnO film can be used.
The hole transport layer is made of, for example, diamine, phenylene diamine, benzidine, or oligoamine. A typical hole transport layer is polyethylene dioxythiophene-polystyrene sulfonate [PEDOT (Polyethylene Dioxythiophene) -PSS. (Polystyrene Sulphonate)].
The light emitting layer is made of a low molecular organic EL or a high molecular (polymer) organic EL. Examples of the low molecular weight organic EL material include a metal complex in which a metal and an organic molecule are coordinated and are typically tris (8-hydroxyquinolinato) aluminum and bis (8-hydroxyquinolinato). Examples thereof include zinc, beryllium complex, and benzoxazole zinc complex. On the other hand, examples of the polymer-based organic EL material include π-conjugated polymers having a structure in which the main chain is spread by π-conjugation, and representative examples include polyphenylene vinylene, polyfluorene, and polyvinyl carbazole.
Examples of the transparent conductive material constituting the cathode include indium oxide, tin oxide, tin-doped indium oxide, zinc oxide, and indium-doped zinc oxide.
Examples of the alkaline component contained in the cathode include alkali metals such as lithium (Li) and cesium (Cs), alkaline earth metals such as calcium (Ca), barium (Ba), and magnesium (Mg), These fluorides such as lithium fluoride (LiF), cesium fluoride (CsF), calcium fluoride (CaF 2 ), and barium fluoride (BaF 2 ) can be mentioned. Used in the form of two or more species. This alkaline component is preferably contained in the cathode in an amount of 1 to 5 atomic%.
The cathode preferably contains at least the alkaline component in the vicinity of the interface of the light emitting layer. Such a cathode can inject electrons into the light emitting layer more effectively by the alkaline component having a low work function distributed in the vicinity of the interface of the light emitting layer.
The cathode has a first cathode layer formed on the light emitting layer and containing a transparent conductive material containing an alkaline component, and a second cathode layer laminated on the first cathode layer and made of a transparent conductive material. A structure is preferable. Such a cathode contains an alkaline component having a low work function in the vicinity of the interface of the light emitting layer, but has the first cathode layer, so that electrons can be more effectively injected into the light emitting layer. Moreover, since it has the 2nd cathode layer which consists of a transparent conductive material on a 1st cathode layer, it becomes possible to improve the transmittance | permeability of light compared with the cathode in which an alkaline component is distributed over the whole.
In the cathode having the first and second cathode layers, the thickness of the first cathode layer in which an alkaline component is contained in the transparent conductive material is 0.5 to 10 nm, and the thickness of the entire cathode is 30 to 200 nm. It is preferable to do.
For example, (1) a method of doping an alkali component after forming a transparent conductive film on the light emitting layer, and (2) an alkali when forming the transparent conductive film by sputtering on the light emitting layer, which will be described below. It is formed by a method of doping a system component, and (3) a method of doping an alkali component when forming a transparent conductive film on the light emitting layer by vacuum deposition.
(1) First, an indium tin oxide film (ITO film), an indium oxide film (In 2 O 3 film) on the light emitting layer by sputtering, vapor deposition, ion plating, chemical vapor deposition (CVD), etc. A transparent conductive film such as a tin oxide film (SnO 2 film), a zinc oxide film (ZnO film), or an indium zinc oxide film (IZO film) is formed. Subsequently, an alkaline component is ion-implanted into the transparent conductive film to form a cathode.
In forming the cathode, since the cathode is required to inject electrons into the light emitting layer more effectively, it is important to lower the work function of the cathode particularly at the interface with the light emitting layer. Therefore, the work function of the cathode at the interface with the light emitting layer is controlled by controlling the film thickness of the transparent conductive film and the ion implantation conditions so that the alkaline component is distributed at a relatively high concentration in the cathode portion near the interface with the light emitting layer. Is preferably lowered.
(2) First, sputtering is performed with an alkaline component tablet placed on a target made of a transparent conductive material such as ITO to form a transparent conductive film doped with an alkaline component on the light emitting layer. Thus, a cathode is formed. The alkaline component used here is preferably a fluoride such as lithium fluoride (LiF), cesium fluoride (CsF), calcium fluoride (CaF 2 ), or barium fluoride (BaF 2 ).
(3) A cathode is formed by forming a transparent conductive film doped with an alkaline component by simultaneously evaporating a transparent conductive material such as ITO and an alkaline component from respective evaporation sources on the light emitting layer.
In the method (2), a sputtering is performed with an alkaline component tablet placed on a target made of a transparent conductive material such as ITO, and the light emitting layer is made of a transparent conductive material doped with an alkaline component. A first cathode layer is formed, and then a target made of a transparent conductive material such as ITO is sputtered to form a cathode by laminating a second cathode layer made of a transparent conductive material on the first cathode layer. .
In the method (3), a first cathode layer comprising a transparent conductive material doped with an alkali component by simultaneously evaporating a transparent conductive material such as ITO and an alkali component from respective evaporation sources on the light emitting layer. After that, only the transparent conductive material such as ITO is evaporated from the evaporation source, and the second cathode layer made of the transparent conductive material is laminated on the first cathode layer to allow the cathode to be formed.
Next, the organic EL display device according to the embodiment of the present invention will be described more specifically with reference to the drawings.

For example, a plurality of anodes 7 1 , 7 2 , 7 3 ,... Made of a metal having a high work function are formed on the interlayer insulating film 4 positioned within the frame of the
In the organic EL display device having such a configuration, when a predetermined TFT (for example, a TFT of a pixel in which the light emitting layer 9 1 is located) 3 1 is turned on among a plurality of TFTs, the drain electrode 2 1 and the contact hole 5 1 are used . A voltage having a desired current value is applied between the anode 7 1 and the

As described above, according to the embodiment of the present invention, the cathode formed on the light emitting layer includes a transparent conductive material containing at least one alkaline component selected from alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, and fluorides thereof. , Low work function and excellent transparency. As a result, when a voltage having a desired current value is applied between the anode and the cathode and holes are injected from the anode through the hole transport layer to the light emitting layer and electrons from the cathode to the light emitting layer, the cathode is low. Since it is a work function, the injection efficiency of electrons into the light emitting layer can be increased. The injected holes and electrons emit light when they are recombined in the light emitting layer, and light can be extracted from the transparent cathode side. In this light extraction from the cathode side, there is no TFT for shielding light on the cathode side, so that the current value and / or voltage value supplied between the positive and negative electrodes is not increased, that is, the light emitting layer is not deteriorated. , Can extract light efficiently.
Therefore, by forming an alkaline component in the transparent conductive material on the light emitting layer and forming a cathode with a low work function and excellent transparency, light can be efficiently extracted from the cathode side, and the life can be extended. An organic EL display device can be realized.
Further, as shown in FIG. 2 described above, the cathode is formed on the light emitting layer, the first cathode layer made of a transparent conductive material containing an alkaline component, and the second cathode made of the transparent conductive material formed on the first cathode layer. By comprising the cathode layer, the efficiency of injecting electrons from the cathode into the light emitting layer can be further improved, and the light transmittance can be further improved as compared with the cathode containing the alkali component as a whole.

Sheet resistance was measured with a four-probe resistance measuring instrument (trade name; R-705, manufactured by Kyowa Riken Co., Ltd.). These results are shown in Table 1 below. Table 1 below also shows the work function and sheet resistance of the ITO film.
As is apparent from Table 1 and Table 2, the Cs-doped ITO film of Example 1 has a sheet resistance equivalent to that of the ITO film and a work function lower than that of the ITO film, and is in the range of 400 to 700 nm. It can be seen that a transparent cathode with a low work function can be realized from this Cs-doped ITO film, which has a light transmittance comparable to that of the ITO film in the wavelength range.
