Abstract
Description
図5の実施例では、オイル5は、カラーディスプレイを実現するため、異なる色素を使うことによって異なる色を有する。この例では、図5に示される構成に対してできるだけ高い輝度を得るために、3種類の例えばオイル、即ち、赤の層5R、緑の層5G及び青の層5Bが使用される。1つの画素は、黒の吸収体16(背景)及び2つのサブ画素A及びBを有し、各々のサブ画素は、図4に示されるものに相当する構成を有する。第1の状態において上部のオイル層5Bは、サブ画素の各々の半分を覆っている。これは、層8’(AF1600)の表面エネルギーを部分的に変更することによって実現できる。他の液体(この場合、水)は、電極12を通じて、固定電圧、例えばグランド(0V)とされる。
例1で生じる白の状態での輝度の変化は、白のオイルを使うことによって回避できる。白のオイルは、例えば、散乱粒子をオイルに分散させることによって得られる。
あるいは、図7に示されるように、減法混色の原色を使うことができる。各サブ画素内の2つのオイル層5が使用される場合、サブ画素当たり1つの原色を実現することができる。固定された減法混色カラーフィルタ21が上部に備えられる場合、表示性能の大きな改良が得られる。図7に示される画素は、3つのサブ画素A、B及びCから成る。サブ画素の各々では、減法混色の原色の順序が交番する。即ち、サブ画素Aに対してM(agenta)、C(yan)、Y(ellow)であり、サブ画素Bに対してC(yan)、Y(ellow)、M(agenta)であり、サブ画素Cに対してY(ellow)、M(agenta)、C(yan)である。
Claims (17)
- 第1の支持プレートと第2の支持プレートとの間のスペースに互いに混合しない第1の液体及び少なくとも1つの第2の液体を有する画素を有する表示装置であって、前記第1の液体は電気導電性又は有極性であり、前記表示装置は少なくとも2つの異なる状態を作るための手段を有し、前記液体のうちの一方の液体が、第1の状態において少なくとも前記第1の支持プレートに隣接し、第2の状態において他方の液体が少なくとも部分的に前記第1の支持プレートに隣接する表示装置。
- 画素が規定されたスペースに対応し、前記第2の状態において、前記他方の液体が実質的に完全に前記第1の支持プレートに隣接する請求項1による表示装置。
- 前記表示装置が、画素内に前記第1の支持プレートの一部の表面において不均一な電界を作る手段を有する請求項1又は2による表示装置。
- 電極と前記第1の支持プレートの一部の表面層との間の誘電層は厚さが変化する請求項3による表示装置。
- 電極と第1の支持プレートの一部の表面との間の誘電層は、変化する誘電率を有する請求項3による表示装置。
- 前記装置が、画素内に、前記第1の支持プレートの一部の表面において変化するぬれ性又は前記第1の液体の層の変化する厚さを有する請求項1又は2による表示装置。
- 画素は、規定されたスペースに対応し、第1の状態において第1の液体層は実質的に完全に両方の支持プレートに隣接する請求項1による表示装置。
- 画素が規定されたスペースに対応し、前記スペースは前記スペースを少なくとも2つのサブ画素に分割する壁部を有し、前記第1の状態において別の液体層が両方のサブ画素内で少なくとも部分的に前記第1の支持プレートに隣接する請求項1による表示装置。
- 前記第1の液体層及び前記別の液体層が異なる色を有する請求項8による表示装置。
- 前記第2の状態において、前記第1の液体層及び前記別の液体層のうちの少なくともいずれかが前記スペースの壁部に隣接する請求項2、7又は8による表示装置。
- 前記第2の状態において前記第1の液体層及び前記別の液体層の一部が混ざることを防止するための手段を有する請求項10による表示装置。
- 中間状態を得るための駆動手段を有する請求項1による表示装置。
- 前記第1の支持プレートの側に吸収体又は反射体を有する請求項1による表示装置。
- 前記他方の層が散乱層又は吸収層である請求項2、7又は8による表示装置。
- 前記他方の層が幾つかの画素に共通である請求項2、7又は8による表示装置。
- カラーフィルタを有する請求項1による表示装置。
- 互いに混合せず第1の支持プレートと第2の支持プレートとの間のスペースに閉じ込められる第1の液体及び少なくとも1つの第2の液体を有する拡散装置であって、前記第1の液体は電気導電性又は有極性であり、前記拡散装置は少なくとも2つの異なる状態を作るための手段を有し、前記液体のうちの一方の液体が、第1の状態において少なくとも前記第1の支持プレートに隣接し、第2の状態において他方の液体が少なくとも部分的に前記第1の支持プレートに隣接する拡散装置。
