Abstract
【解決手段】 液晶層に横電界を印加する半透過型IPS液晶表示装置において、透過表示部は、透過型IPS液晶表示装置と同様の液晶配向方向105、106と偏光板透過軸41p、42pとした上で、反射表示部における液晶層のリタデーションを4分の1波長とし、その液晶配向方向102、103を透過表示部における偏光板透過軸41p、42p(液晶配向方向105、106)に対して45°をなすように設定する。

Description
次に、暗表示における透過率の視角特性を評価した。図4は暗表示透過率の極角依存性を示しており、異なる方位角において測定した値を併記してある。暗表示透過率は何れの方位角においても充分に低下している。比較のため、透過型IPSの暗表示透過率の極角依存性を図21に示す。図4と図21を比較して明らかなように、本実施例の半透過型液晶表示装置は透過型IPS液晶表示装置と同等の透過表示特性が得られている。
比較のため、反射表示部と透過表示部の液晶配向方向を同一にし、位相板を第一の基板及び第二の基板の外側に全面に渡って配置した従来の半透過型液晶表示装置を作製した。その断面を図22に示す。
暗表示透過率の液晶層厚依存性に着目して、本発明の液晶表示装置と、第一の基板及び第二の基板の外側に全面に渡って配置した従来の半透過型液晶表示装置を比較した。
液晶表示装置を携帯電話等に適用する場合には、薄型軽量が要求されるため、液晶パネルの厚さに着目して、本発明の液晶表示装置と、第一の基板及び第二の基板の外側に全面に渡って位相板を配置した従来の半透過型液晶表示装置とを比較した。ここで、液晶パネルとは第一の偏光板と第二の偏光板のよって挟まれる部分を示す。
Claims (8)
- 第一の基板と第二の基板と液晶層とから構成され、第一の基板と第二の基板は液晶層を挟持し、第二の基板は画素電極と共通電極を有し、画素電極と共通電極との間に基板面に対して概略平行な電界を印加して液晶層を駆動し、一画素内に反射表示部と透過表示部を備え、第一の基板と第二の基板の外側に第一の偏光板と第二の偏光板を有し、第一の偏光板と第二の偏光板の透過軸は互いに直交する液晶表示装置において、
透過表示部における液晶配向方向は、第一の偏光板と第二の偏光板の透過軸の何れか一方に対して平行であり、反射表示部における液晶配向方向は、第一の偏光板と第二の偏光板の透過軸に対して40度以上50度以下の角度をなすことを特徴とする液晶表示装置。 - 第一の基板と第二の基板と液晶層とから構成され、第一の基板と第二の基板は液晶層を挟持し、第二の基板は画素電極と共通電極を有し、画素電極と共通電極との間に基板面に対して概略平行な電界を印加して液晶層を駆動し、一画素内に反射表示部と透過表示部を備え、第一の基板と第二の基板の外側に第一の偏光板と第二の偏光板を有し、第一の偏光板と第二の偏光板の透過軸は互いに直交する液晶表示装置において、
透過表示部における液晶配向方向は、第一の偏光板と第二の偏光板の透過軸の何れか一方に対して平行であり、反射表示部における液晶配向方向は、少なくとも光入射面に近接する界面において第一の偏光板と第二の偏光板の透過軸に対して40度以上50度以下の角度をなすことを特徴とする液晶表示装置。 - 反射表示部における液晶層のリタデーションは、4分の1波長であることを特徴とする請求項1又は2に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 液晶配向方向と電界印加方向のなす角は、反射表示部と透過表示部において等しいことを特徴とする請求項1又は2に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 反射表示部における液晶配向方向と電界印加方向のなす角は、透過表示部における液晶配向方向と電界印加方向のなす角よりも小さいことを特徴とする請求項1又は2に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 画素電極の櫛歯状構造の方向が、反射表示部と透過表示部において異なることを特徴とする請求項1又は2に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 反射表示部の液晶層は捩れ配向であり、透過表示部の液晶層はホモジニアス配向であり、画素電極に近接する界面において反射表示部の液晶層と透過表示部の液晶層の配向方向が等しいことを特徴とする請求項1又は2に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 反射表示部の液晶層厚は、各カラーフィルタに対応する画素毎に異なり、各カラーフィルタの主要な透過波長において液晶層のリタデーションが4分の1波長であることを特徴とする請求項1又は2に記載の液晶表示装置。
