Abstract
Description
【0001】

TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an image forming apparatus and an image forming method using an electrophotographic method.
[0002]
[Prior art]
For example, in an image forming method by an electrophotographic method used in a copier, a printer, and the like, the quality of a fine image such as a fine line or a dot in a formed visible image is improved, and a high-quality image comparable to a print is formed. For this reason, toner particles having a reduced particle size are used.
[0003]
As a method for obtaining toner particles having a reduced particle size, a method for producing a toner by a so-called polymerization method is known. However, the toner produced by the polymerization method has a particle shape closer to a sphere and a smaller diameter than the toner particles produced by the pulverization method, so that the untransferred toner on the image carrier is sufficiently cleaned. As a result, the formed visible image has a disadvantage that image defects such as background stains and black stripes due to poor cleaning are likely to occur in the formed visible image.
[0004]
In order to solve the above-mentioned drawbacks, it has been found that a lubricant is applied to the surface of the image carrier, whereby the effect of cleaning by a cleaning means such as a cleaning blade is greatly improved (for example, See Patent Document 1.).
[0005]
On the other hand, for the purpose of controlling the density and gradation of the formed visible image, a toner patch for image density detection is formed on the image carrier, and the density of the patch image of the toner patch is detected by a density sensor. Although the toner patch is developed by the developing device on the image carrier, the toner patch is not transferred onto the recording material by the transfer unit, and the cleaning unit is operated with a large amount of toner adhered. Cleaning is performed.
[0006]
Also, in an image forming apparatus that performs reversal development, the image carrier is usually stopped when the machine is stopped before starting a visible image acquisition process (hereinafter, also referred to as a “job”) for continuously acquiring a plurality of visible images. A belt-like toner image, which is inevitably called a toner band, is formed in a region downstream of the charging device in the rotation direction and upstream of the developing device, though it is not charged at the start of the job. However, this toner band is not transferred in the transfer area, and is cleaned by the cleaning unit while the amount of toner adhered is large.
[0007]
It is difficult to completely clean a toner patch, a toner band, or the like in a high state where a large amount of toner is attached by a cleaning unit, and as a result, an image defect may occur in a visible image formed due to poor cleaning. .
[0008]
In order to solve this problem, a lubricant is applied to a position where the toner patch is to be formed before the toner patch is formed or before the toner band is formed, so that the toner image carrier after the development is developed. It has been known that the adhesive force to the substrate is weakened, thereby significantly improving the cleaning effect.
[0009]
However, the lubricant is a consumable, and if the lubricant is always applied to the surface of the image carrier, the lubricant is applied to all the areas including the unnecessary areas, and the consumption of the lubricant increases. At an early stage, for example, a lubricant such as a lubricant stock reaches an unusable limit value, and thereafter, the lubricant cannot be applied, and as a result, sufficient cleaning cannot be performed. There is a risk.

[0011]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
The present invention has been made in view of the above circumstances, and an object thereof is to provide an image using a small-diameter spherical toner whose shape satisfies specific conditions so that an image of excellent quality can be formed. In the image forming apparatus or the image forming method, it is possible to prevent the lubricant from reaching an unusable limit value at an early stage, and to reliably remove the untransferred toner by the cleaning unit. It is an object of the present invention to provide an image forming apparatus or an image forming method capable of always forming a good visible image without defects.
[0012]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
An image forming apparatus according to the present invention includes an image carrier that is rotated, and a toner image forming unit that develops an electrostatic latent image formed in an image forming area on the surface of the image carrier with toner to form a toner image. Transfer means for transferring a toner image formed on the image carrier onto a recording material, cleaning means for removing untransferred toner on the image carrier, and a cleaning means on the surface of the image carrier upstream of the cleaning means. [Action]
According to the above image forming apparatus, while using a small-diameter spherical toner whose shape satisfies specific conditions so that an image of excellent quality can be formed, only in an image forming area where a toner image is to be formed, Alternatively, the lubricant is applied only to the image holding area where the toner image is to be transferred, and the lubricant is not applied to the non-image forming area or the non-image holding area. Since the untransferred toner can be sufficiently reliably cleaned while avoiding consumption, it is possible to prevent the lubricant from being consumed to an unusable limit value at an early stage. A visible image can be formed.
[0024]
According to the above-described image forming method, while using a small-diameter spherical toner whose shape satisfies specific conditions so that an image of excellent image quality can be formed, a non-image on which an image density detection toner patch is to be formed is used. The lubricant is applied to an unnecessary area by applying a lubricant to the formation area or the non-image holding area to which the image density detection toner patch is to be transferred before forming or transferring the image density detection toner patch. The toner patch can be sufficiently reliably cleaned while the consumption of the lubricant is avoided, so that the lubricant can be prevented from being consumed up to the unusable limit value at an early stage. A visible image can be formed.
[0025]
Further, according to the image forming method, while using a small-diameter spherical toner whose shape satisfies a specific condition so that an image of excellent image quality can be formed, in a post-processing operation performed after the job, Since the lubricant is applied in advance to the area where the image carrier makes at least one rotation, or to the area of the intermediate transfer body that comes into contact with the area of the first rotation of the image carrier in the next job, it becomes unnecessary. The toner band formed in the first rotation of the image carrier in the next job can be sufficiently reliably cleaned while avoiding the consumption of the lubricant in the unnecessary area, so that the lubricant can be quickly removed. It is possible to suppress consumption up to an unusable limit value, and it is possible to always form a good visible image without image defects.

[0042]
Further, as the toner, those having a degree of sphericity in the range of 0.94 to 0.98 are used, and those having a sphericity in the range of 0.95 to 0.97 are particularly preferably used. A toner having a sphericity of greater than 0.98 has poor cleaning properties because the particles are too close to a true sphere, while a toner having a sphericity of less than 0.94 has irregularities in the particles. Since the toner particles are large and are easily broken by the pressure in the machine, and the toner particles are not uniformly charged in the developing
[0043]
Here, the term “degree of sphericity” refers to the true degree of sphericity of Wadel, which is defined by the following equation (1).
[0044]
(Equation 1)
Equation (1)
Ψ = (Specific surface area calculated assuming true sphere from particle size distribution / BET specific surface area)
[0045]
The “specific surface area calculated assuming a true sphere from the particle size distribution” in the above equation (1) is a value measured by a “laser diffraction type particle size distribution measuring device HEROS (HEROS)” (sold by JEOL Ltd.). The dispersion of the toner particles is performed for 60 seconds by using a 150 W ultrasonic homogenizer after putting a measurement sample, a surfactant, and water as a dispersion medium in a 50 cc beaker.
The “BET specific surface area” in the above equation (1) is measured by “Micromeritex Flow Soap II2300” (Shimadzu Corporation).
[0046]
The above toner is prepared by suspension polymerization or emulsion polymerization of a monomer in a liquid to which an emulsion of necessary additives is added to produce fine polymerized particles, and thereafter, an organic solvent, an aggregating agent, etc. Can be produced by a method of polymerizing a polymerizable monomer in an aqueous medium, such as an emulsion polymerization association method produced by a method of adding and associating.
The aqueous medium in the above refers to a medium containing at least 50% by mass or more of water.
[0047]
The developer is manufactured by, for example, mixing the above toner and a ferrite carrier coated with a styrene-methacrylate copolymer and having an average particle diameter of 65 μm at a ratio of 50 g of the toner and 950 g of the carrier. It can be.
In the image forming apparatus of the present invention, as described above, by using a developer containing a small-diameter spherical toner whose shape satisfies specific conditions, the halftone image quality is improved, and fine lines and dots are improved. It is possible to form a visible image of excellent image quality in which the image quality of a fine image is improved.

An organic photoreceptor having characteristics was used, and the magnitude of the linear velocity when the image carrier was rotated was set to 370 mm / sec.
[0088]
As the charging device, a scorotron charger having positive discharge characteristics is used, as the exposure device, a semiconductor laser irradiation device having a surface standard output of 300 μm is used, and as the developing device, a two-component developing type is used. Was.
[0089]
As the transfer means, a contact transfer method using a transfer roller is used. This transfer roller is a half of a foamed sponge state in which carbon is dispersed in a silicone resin on the outer peripheral surface of a cylindrical conductive core made of stainless steel. The one having a coating layer made of conductive rubber was used.
As the fixing device, a heat roller fixing system including a heating roller and a pressure roller was used, and the fixing temperature was set to 200 ° C.
[0090]
Then, a polymerized toner having a volume average particle size of 4.5 μm and a degree of sphericity of 0.96 and a ferrite carrier having a volume average particle size of 35 μm are mixed at a ratio of 70 g of toner and 930 g of carrier. Thus, a developer was produced.
[0091]
As the cleaning means, a cleaning blade made of urethane rubber and having a JIS A hardness of 67 ° and a plate-shaped cleaning blade having a rebound resilience coefficient measured at 25 ° C. of 50% was used.
The pressing force of the cleaning blade against the image carrier was set at 192 mN / cm, and the effective contact angle against the image carrier was set at 20 °.
[0092]
The lubricant applying means used had a configuration including a lubricant stock, a brush roller, and a pressing device.
The brush roller is “SA-7” (manufactured by Toray Industries, Inc.). Specifically, a long woven fabric in which polypropylene resin brush fibers are densely implanted is a peripheral surface of the roller base. And formed into a roll shape. The brush roller had an outer diameter of 18 mm and an axial length of 335 mm. The amount of the brush roller biting into the image carrier was set to 1.0 mm, and the rotation speed of the brush roller was set to 250 rpm. The lubricant stock used was a solid lubricant made of zinc stearate having a length of 8 mm, a width of 10 mm, and an axial length of 335 mm, and the pressing force of the lubricant stock against the brush roller was set to 0.8 N. Set. The amount of the lubricant applied per one visible image to be formed is set to 2.5 × 10 -3 mm 3 Set to.
[0093]
In this image forming apparatus, a setting was made so as to control the application of the lubricant only to the image forming area, and the following actual test was performed. Table 1 shows the results.
[0094]
[Live-action test]
In a low-temperature and low-humidity environment (temperature: 10 ° C., relative humidity: 20%), a document having a document image blackening ratio of 6% is continuously copied, and the document image is blackened at 10,000 copies and 100,000 copies, respectively. One copy of a document having a rate of 100% was made, and the occurrence of image defects of this one copy was visually observed.

[0100]
<Example 5>
In the monochrome image forming apparatus used in the first embodiment, instead of setting to control to apply the lubricant only in the image forming area, the lubricant is applied to the area during one rotation of the image carrier in the post-processing operation. The actual shooting test was performed in the same manner as in Example 1. Table 1 shows the results.
[0101]
<Example 6>
In the color image forming apparatus used in the second embodiment, instead of setting to control to apply the lubricant only in the image holding area, the first rotation of each image carrier in the next job is performed in the post-processing operation. A real-photographing test was performed in the same manner as in Example 1 by using the one set so as to control the application of the lubricant to the area of the intermediate transfer belt that comes in contact with the belt. [0102]
[Table 1]
[0103]
From the above Examples 1 to 6 and Comparative Examples 1 and 2, the control shown in Examples 1 to 6 suppresses the occurrence of image defects over a long period of time, so that no lubricant is required. It has been confirmed that the occurrence of cleaning failure is suppressed for a long time due to not being consumed in the region, and a good visible image without image defects can always be formed.
[0104]
【The invention's effect】
According to the image forming apparatus of the present invention, while using a small-diameter spherical toner whose shape satisfies a specific condition so that an image of excellent quality can be formed, only an image forming area where a toner image is to be formed is used. Alternatively, the lubricant is applied only to the image holding area where the toner image is to be transferred, and the lubricant is not applied to the non-image forming area or the non-image holding area. And the untransferred toner can be sufficiently reliably cleaned while avoiding the consumption of the lubricant, so that the lubricant can be prevented from being consumed up to the unusable limit value at an early stage. A visible image can be formed.
[0105]
According to the image forming method of the present invention, while using a small-diameter spherical toner whose shape satisfies a specific condition so that an image of excellent quality can be formed, a non-image forming area or a toner patch where a toner patch is to be formed By applying a lubricant to the non-image holding area where the toner patch is to be transferred before forming or transferring the toner patch, the toner patch can be sufficiently secured while avoiding consumption of the lubricant to an unnecessary area. As a result, it is possible to prevent the lubricant from being consumed up to the unusable limit value at an early stage, and to always form a good visible image without image defects.
[0106]
Further, according to the image forming method of the present invention, a post-processing operation that is performed after the job is performed while using a small-diameter spherical toner whose shape satisfies a specific condition so that an image with excellent image quality can be formed. By applying a lubricant in advance to an area during which the image carrier makes at least one rotation, or an area of the intermediate transfer body with which the area of the first rotation of the image carrier contacts in the next job, While the consumption of the lubricant in the unnecessary area is avoided, the toner band formed inevitably at the first rotation of the image carrier in the next job can be sufficiently reliably cleaned, so that the lubricant can be quickly removed. It is possible to suppress consumption up to an unusable limit value, and it is possible to always form a good visible image without image defects.
