Abstract
Description
【0001】

TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a plasma display device known as a large-screen, thin, and lightweight display device.
[0002]
[Prior art]
In a plasma display device, color display is performed by generating ultraviolet rays by gas discharge and exciting a phosphor with the ultraviolet rays to emit light.
[0003]
Plasma display devices are roughly classified into AC type and DC type in terms of driving, and there are two types of discharge types: surface discharge type and counter discharge type. At present, a surface discharge type plasma display device having a three-electrode structure is mainly used due to the accompanying simplicity of manufacturing.
[0004]

FIG. 7 shows a one-field drive timetable configuration for driving the plasma display device. One field is composed of a plurality of subfields, for example, eight subfields, and each of these subfields is composed of an initialization period, a writing period, a light emission sustaining period, and an erasing period.
[0009]
FIG. 8 shows driving waveforms for the initialization period and the writing period among the driving waveforms of the conventional plasma display device, and describes the initialization operation in the initialization period including the application of the priming pulse and the writing operation in the writing period. [0015]
Here, regarding the application of the priming pulse, in addition to the case of applying the priming pulse to all the subfields in all the fields, there is a method of controlling the number of subfields to which the priming pulse is applied in one field based on the image information of the display image. Are known. A specific example will be described below. For example, when the display gradation is composed of eight sub-fields per field, the input signal corresponds to the eight sub-fields SF1 to SF8 for each cell of each color from LSB (least significant bit) to MSB (most significant bit). Bit) up to 8 bits. Here, when the subfield information indicating which subfield emits light indicates that, for example, at least one of the bits corresponding to the fifth to eighth subfields emits light for all cells of all colors. The displayed image is determined to be bright, and a priming pulse is applied three times in total in SF1, SF3 and SF5 in one field, for example. On the other hand, for example, when all the bits corresponding to the fifth to eighth subfields SF5 to SF8 for all cells of all colors indicate that no light is emitted, the display image is determined to be dark, and for example, In one field, a priming pulse is applied only in SF1. As described above, by changing the number of subfields to which the priming pulse is applied in one field in accordance with the brightness of the screen, light emission due to the priming operation can be suppressed on a dark screen, and the brightness of the entire screen can be reduced. Thus, it is possible to prevent the image quality from being degraded due to the priming operation.
[0016]

However, the activation state of the discharge gas of the
[0017]
The present invention has been made in view of the above situation, and can prevent a writing error in a writing period caused by the influence of the number of light emission sustaining operations in the previous subfield, and perform good image display. It is an object of the present invention to provide a plasma display device that can be used.
[0018]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to achieve the above object, a plasma display device according to the present invention is a plasma display device including a panel unit that displays an image, and a driving unit that outputs a driving voltage for driving the panel unit. Divides one field into a plurality of subfields, and applies a priming pulse in one or more subfields. The voltage value of the priming pulse is determined by the lighting of the subfield before the application of the priming pulse. This is set according to the state.
[0019]
As described above, it is possible to provide a plasma display device which can prevent a writing error in a writing period due to the influence of the number of light emission sustaining operations in the previous subfield and can display an excellent image.
[0020]
BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
That is, the invention according to
[0021]
The invention according to a second aspect is the invention according to the first aspect, further comprising a priming pulse voltage value discriminating means for setting a voltage value of the priming pulse.
[0022]
According to a third aspect of the present invention, in the first aspect of the present invention, the subfield has a write period, and further includes a write operation determining means for determining the lighting state based on the presence or absence of a write operation in the write period. is there.
[0023]
According to a fourth aspect of the present invention, in the third aspect of the present invention, the writing operation determining means determines the lighting state of the subfield in a predetermined area of the panel section.
[0024]
According to a fifth aspect of the present invention, in the invention of the fourth aspect, the panel portion includes a front plate on which a plurality of display electrodes are formed, and a back plate on which a plurality of data electrodes are formed so as to be orthogonal to the display electrodes. Are arranged opposite to each other to form a discharge cell at the intersection of the display electrode and the data electrode, and the predetermined region is a plurality of discharge cells continuously arranged with the display electrode in common.
[0025]
According to a sixth aspect of the present invention, in the first aspect of the invention, the voltage value of the priming pulse is different for each display electrode.
[0026]
Hereinafter, an embodiment of the present invention will be described with reference to the drawings. However, the embodiment of the present invention is not limited to this.
[0027]
(Embodiment 1)
Since the structure of the panel portion of the plasma display device of the present embodiment is the same as that shown in FIG. 5, detailed description is omitted, and the following is a characteristic point of the present embodiment. The driving section will be described in detail.
[0028]
FIG. 1 is a block diagram showing a schematic configuration of the plasma display device according to the first embodiment of the present invention. The same components as those in the block diagram shown in FIG. 6 are denoted by the same reference numerals. The plasma display device according to the present embodiment includes a

Next, among the driving voltage waveforms output by the driving unit of the plasma display device according to the first embodiment, the driving voltage waveforms in the initialization period including the priming pulse application period and the writing period are shown in FIG. As shown in FIG. 2A, in the initialization period at the beginning of a plurality of subfields forming one field, all

Here, in the following description, the voltage value of the priming pulse indicates the above-mentioned voltage Vb (V). Changing the priming pulse voltage Vb (V) so that the potential difference between the scan electrode 6 (applied voltage Vb (V)) and the sustain electrode 7 (applied voltage Vh (V)) becomes smaller is referred to as “positive direction”. Conversely, changing the priming pulse voltage Vb (V) so as to increase the potential difference is expressed as "increase in the negative direction".

FIG. 3 shows an example of a partial area of the plasma display panel and gradations expressed in one predetermined field. FIG. 4 shows the relationship between the expression gradation and the lighting subfield when one field is composed of eight subfields.

The voltage value of the priming pulse does not need to be determined based on the number of light emission sustaining operations in the immediately preceding subfield or two consecutive subfields including the immediately preceding subfield, and affects the activation state of the discharge gas in the subfield. In the case of the number of light emission sustaining operations, even if the light emitting sustaining operation is performed before a plurality of subfields or in a subfield several fields earlier, the number of light emitting sustaining operations in the subfield is used as a determination criterion. Just fine.

Further, the voltage value of the priming pulse need not be determined only for the
[0040]
Further, in the above description, the setting of the voltage value Vb (V) of the priming pulse is, for example, as shown in FIG. 1, configured as two types of voltage Vb and voltage Vc (V), or variable with a plurality of voltage values. And the like.

[0042]
Also, the number of subfields constituting one field in FIG. 4 does not necessarily have to be eight, and the same effect can be obtained when the number of subfields is one or more.
[0043]
Further, the priming pulse does not necessarily need to be applied during the initialization period, and the same effect can be obtained if it is applied during the period prior to the writing operation.
[0044]
Further, the voltage value of the priming pulse is different for each of the first row electrodes or the plurality of first row electrodes.
[0045]
As a result, the voltage value of the priming pulse can be determined according to the lighting state of the discharge cell constituted by the row electrodes to which the same drive waveform is applied, so that an appropriate priming pulse voltage value for the writing operation can be set.

【The invention's effect】
As described above, according to the present invention, the voltage value of the priming pulse applied before the writing period is configured to be variable depending on the lighting state in the subfield before the application of the priming pulse. The voltage value of the priming pulse can be set to an appropriate value according to the number of light emission sustaining operations in the subfield before application, thereby preventing a writing error during a writing period and performing a good image display. It is possible to provide a plasma display device that can be used.
