Si descrive un processo per la preparazione di acido 2,2-dimetil-5 (2,5-xililossi)-valerico per reazione di 2, 5-dimetilfenolo con un composto di formula II: (FORMULA II) dove R è un gruppo alchilico, arilico, arilalchilico e X è un atomo di alogeno, e successiva idrolisi a composto I, caratterizzato dal fatto che la reazione fra composto II e 2, 5-dimetilfenolo viene effettuata in assenza di solventi e in presenza di un sale di ammonio o fosfonio quaternario.
