Claims (14)

43070-2 .A WHAT I CLAIM IS:
1. A self-supporting semi-conducting electric heating unit having a positive temperature resistance coefficient, said unit comprising a substantially flat moulded mass consisting of a rigid cured mixture containing a polymeric synthetic resin, an electrically conductive refractory material and an inert electrically non—conductive refractory material, and a pair of electrodes adapted for connection to a source of current supply and bonded to opposed sides of the mass so as to allow current to flow through~~the mass in a direction transverse to the lengthwise direction of the electrodes.
2. An electric heating unit as in Claim 1, wherein the electrically conductive refractory material is of carbonaceous composition.
3. An electric heating unit as in Claim 2, wherein the electrically conductive refractory material is graphite. '
4. An electric heating unit as in any of the preceding claims, wherein the synthetic resin is a polyester or epoxy resin.
5. An electric heating unit as in any of Claims 1 to 4, wherein said non-conductive refractory material is of siliceous composition.
6. An electric heating unit as in any of the preceding claims, wherein the electrodes are formed from braided or stranded copper wire.
7. A method of forming an electric resistance unit to any of the preceding claims, said method compris preparing a viscous polymerizing mixture containing the synthetic resin, the electrically conductive and non- conductive refractory materials, preparing a mould with a cavity of a shape appropriate to the desired external shape of the finished unit, supporting a pair of electrodes within the mould at a predetermined distance apart with end connecting portions communicating with the outside of the mould cavity, pouring the mixture into the mould and allowing the mixture to cure.
8. Method of forming, .an electric heating unit substantially in accordance with any of Examples I to V herein.
9. "A space heating unit comprising an electric heating unit in accordance with any of Claims 1 to 6 encapsulated in a mass of electrically insulating refractory material.
10. An electric heating unit substantially as described with reference to Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings.
11. The method of forming an electric heating unit - - substantially as described with reference to Figures 2 and 3 of the accompanying drawings.
12. A space heating unit substantially as described with reference to Figures 4 and 5 of the accompanying drawings.
13. ' The method of forming a space heating unit substantially as described with reference to Figures 6 to 8 of the accompanying drawings.
14. The method of forming a space heating unit substantially as described with reference to Figures 9 and 10 of the accompanying drawings. For the Applicants DR. REMUOLB GQHH AND PARTN
