The invention also relates to a method of producing or reproducing such a metal container. The invention particularly relates to a sheet metal container made from steel such as an oil drum, but is not limited to the use of sheet steel.
Metal shipping containers are widely used for the packaging, storage. and transport of materials such as oil products, food products, liquid chemicals, paints and other liquid, semi-liquid, pulverous or granular materials .
In use said containers may become damaged, dented or otherwise deformed. Also the contents frequently are of a character which, after emptying the container, leaves a residu in the container whiph cannot satisfactorily be removed when an attempt is made to use the bung opening which provides an orifice of but limited size for access to and cleaning of the container's interior. Therefore, a larger opening must be made which also permits the insertion of suitable tools or devices for the removal of dents, and otherwise reshaping the walls of the container if necessary. To this end it e.g. is known to cut the empty container into two halves, clean and reshape said halves and again weld the two parts together. It will be understood that this more or less complicated operation Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide a metal shipping container of which the interior can easily and fully be made accessible and which after having been reconditioned can be closed again to produce a complete container which can be used again which operations do not change the contents of the container.
It should be noted that the term "to recondition" is to be understood to include not only the steps of cleaning and reshaping a container but also removing an internal and/or an external lining or coating, if present, or replacing such lining or coating with a lining or a coating made of similar or different material. It may also include the step of applying a lining and/or a coating for the first time.
According to the invention said object is achieved in that said parts of the container in or adjacent to the circumferential plane of the side wall are secured to another by means of an adhesive substance between overlapping wall portions, said adhesive melting or otherwise disintegrating when subjected to heat and/or solvent. Due to these measures the container always can be divided into two or more parts the inner side of which being easily accessible and accordingly easily can be cleaned, coated, reshaped and so on. To use an adhesive substance in interconnecting the essential parts of containers of this type which during use are subjected to heavy loads and bad treatments is entirely novel. The separation of the parts by desintegrating the adhesive substance is a simple operation which does not destroy any material nor deform any parts of the container. become so brittle that it falls to pieces when being subjected to an external force which is sufficient to separate the parts of the container but which is insufficient to deform these parts. It may also dissolve when heated and/ or when a suitable solvent is applied.
The container according to the invention may therefore after having been used one or more times be taken apart by melting or otherwise disintegrating the adhesive substance. After reconditioning said parts can be united again to produce a complete container which has the same capacity and also in other objects is indistinguishable from a new container of the same type simply by applying a fresh adhesive substance and by glueing the parts together again.
In a preferred embodiment of this invention the side wall of the container consists of two or more overlapping parts, each of two of said parts being permanently secured to an end wall. Thus, in its simplest form the container consists of two halves each comprising an end wall and one half of the side wall permanently secured thereto.
Said two halves have a height which substantially is half the height of the complete container which facilitates the handling of the two parts.
According to the invention the overlapping wall parts may be cylindrical one part having an outer diameter which is smaller than the inner diameter of the other part such that an adhesive substance can be present between said overlapping parts.
According to a preferred embodement of the invention the two halves of the container, or more generally the parts of the container, may be formed such that one of extremity of one part and its cooperating wall portion, to form the joint is formed by a corresponding tapering extremity of an or the other part. The advantage of using tapering and flaring extremities over the use of cylindrical parts is that in joining the parts together or separating the parts the two parts do not shift with respect to each other. Shifting of the parts with respect to each other might have the detrimental result that the freshly applied adhesive is swept off.
According to a further development the tapered extre mity of one part is joined to a cylindrical main portion of said part by means of a flaring side wall portion, so that said part has an extremity in the form of two truncated cones placed with their "bases against each other the outer one of said cones being overlapped by and adhered to the flaring extremity of the other part.
According to the invention the container may be formed by two identical parts each having an end wall as well as a side wall portion whilst further an annular part has been provided overlapping the juxtaposed extremities of the two identical parts. If the two identical parts have tapered extremities the annular part is an outer ring. If the extremities are flaring the annular part is an inner ring. Using two identical parts facilitates the manufacturing as well as the reconditioning.
Instead of providing the overlapping joint between the parts of the container somewhere inbetween the two end walls it is also possible according to an alternative of the invention to secure said end walls to the side wall by means of an adhesive substance.
According to the invention the adhesive substance polyethylene. If the container is made of steel it is recommended to apply an intermediate layer eliminating or compensating the activity of oxidation preventing compounds present at the polyethylene to steel interface.
The adhesive may also consist of or include low melting alloys, araldites or any other metal glues.
It is observed in this respect that the adhesion of polyethylene to steel forms the subject matter of an older patent application in Israel, viz. No.: 27.500.
The invention further relates to a method of producing or reproducing a metal container according to the invention and said method includes the steps of obtaining at least two container parts which when assembled together constitute a complete container, securing said parts to one another in a liquid tight and strong way solely by means of an adhesive substance that melts or otherwise disintegrates when subjected to heat and/or solvent and securing that parts in such a way that they can be separated from one another without having to be deformed. In a preferred embodiment the areas to be connected primarily are coated by applying an intermediate layer eliminating or compensating the activity of oxidation preventing compounds present at that areas after which said coated areas are heated and polyethylene powder is thrown at said hot areas, the access of powder is shaked off and said areas with the powdered sides are pressed against each other and simultaneously heated. As an intermediate layer use can be made of a metal organic compound paint drier as an exemple phenolic lacquer in particular epoxy phenolic lacquer is mentioned.
The sense of using an expendable polyethylene is According to an alternative construction the extreme edge of the part with said tapered extremity is outwardly folded back upon itself. This strengthens said extreme edge. Further the dimensions may be such that said folded back edge projects into and tightly fits in a cylindrical side wall portion adjacent to the flaring extremity of the cooperating other part. This keeps the contents of the container far from the adhesive substance. If necessary to this end also a sealing means such as a gasket can be provided around said folded edge.
The invention now will be further elucidated with reference to the drawings.
Fig. 1 is a side elevation partly section of a container according to the invention in the form of a drum.
Fig. 2 is a crossection of the upper part of the container shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a crossection of the lower part of the container of Fig. 1.
Fig shows at an enlarged scale in crossection the connection of the end wall to the side wall of the parts of Fig. 2 and 3 respectively.
Fig 5 shows at an enlarged scale one form of the joint between the two parts.
Fig. 6 shows an alternative form of the joint of Fig.5- Fig. 7 and 8 show other embodiments of the joint.
The container shown in Fig. 1 comprises the upper part 1 and the lower part 2. The upper part which separately has been shown in Fig. 2 comprises the end wall 3 with the filling or emptying opening and the air inlet or escape opening 5· Both openings can be provided with As more clearly shown in Fig. 2 the upper part has a flaring extremity 7 whilst as shown in Fig. 3 the lower part has a tapered extremity 8. Said flaring extremity 7 and tapered extremity 8 have the same inclination, e.g. 1 : 10.
As shown in Fig 3 the tapered extremity 8 joins a flaring part 9 having the same inclination as the flaring part 7 n Fig. 2 and also having the same width and distance from the end wall as with the upper part of Fig. 2. Accordingly the same die may be used in manufacturing this part of the container.
As shown in Fig. 4- the end walls 3 and 6 are cup-shaped comprising an almost flat bottom portion 10 and a skirt portion 11 interconnected by a curved edge portion 12. The skirt portion 11 fits within the side wall portion 13 and said parts may be secured to each other in any convenient way e.g. by means of welding.
At 14 a reinforcing ring has been indicated with the horizontal leg .iW and a vertical leg 16 the latter engaging the inner side of the side wall 13 and being folded together with side wall outwardly into a chi 17.
Fig.5 at an enlarged scale shows the interconnection of the tapered part 8 with the flaring part 7 by means of the adhesive substance 18.
In the alternative embodiment of Fig. 6 the tapered extremity is at its extreme edge folded back as indicated with the reference 19 · · Said folded back portion fits into the cylindrical part 20. This folded back edge not only reinforces that edge but also especially when fitting into the cylindrical part seals the adhesive layer show in the same way as the Fig. and 6 alternative forms of the joints. According to Fig. the container is formed out of two identical halves with flaring extremities 21 and 22 interconnected by means of an inner double coned ring 23 adhered to both extremities 21 and 22.
Fig. 8 shows a similar construction in which, however, the two identical parts of the container have tapered extremities 24- and 25 joined with each other by means of the outer ring 26.
