Abstract

Benzaldehyde is brominated in a chlorinated hydrocarbon as solvent with a mixture of bromine and chlorine as brominating agent. This allows less bromine to be consumed and a higher yield of 3-bromobenzaldehyde to be obtained compared with the known processes. 3-Bromobenzaldehyde is an intermediate in the preparation of 3-phenoxybenzyl alcohol derivatives, which are used in the synthesis of insecticides.
