A rotary motor operated by steam or compressed air has two or three stages, each comprising two rotors, such as 1, 4 which mesh by teeth 22, 23 on their peripheries and by blades 16, 17, 60, 61 which engage recesses 38, 37, 63, 62. The second stage, connected to the first stage by gearing, or by chain drive, has a larger working space, provided by increasing the axial length (see Fig. 2, not shown), or by increasing the radial length of the blades. A third stage, of greater capacity than the second, may also be provided (Figs. 5-8, not shown). The tips of the blades have grooves 70 which act as labyrinth seals, and the seal may be improved by injecting compressed air into these grooves. The motor may also be operated on compressed fuel-air mixture, whose admission is controlled by cam operated inlet valves 71. Two of the blades of the first stage, 60, 61, may then be dispensed with, since the valves prevent direct communication between the inlet 28 and outlet 42 of the first stage. Spark plugs or glow plugs 72-85 are provided, and a catalyst, such as a platinum screen may be provided in the transfer passage to ensure complete combustion
