An assembled electrode system-e.g. the electron gun of a cathode-ray tube-is immersed in a liquified gas-e.g. liquid air, oxygen, or nitrogen-immediately prior to its introduction into the tube envelope, whereby dust and loose particles are removed from the electrode surfaces, and arcing between, and cold emission from, the electrodes in the completed tube is reduced.
