Abstract

1321018 Cold cathode tubes HUGHES AIRCRAFT CO 19 April 1971 [16 March 1970] 22162/71 Heading H1D A switching device comprises an envelope 34, which may be a ceramic cylinder with metal end flanges 30, 56, containing gas at reduced pressure, an outer electrode 42, an intermediate electrode 48 and an inner electrode 80, electrodes 42 and 48 being tubular and each inter-electrode space is substantially uniform, connection being made to electrodes 42 and 80 through end flanges 30 and 56 respectively and to electrode 48 through a supporting flange 46; and means, such as a solenoid (82) Fig. 2 (not shown), to provide a magnetic field in the inter-electrode spaces when the device is to conduct by increasing the electron path lengths sufficiently to cause ionization of the gas. A gas source 70 consists of titanium hydride from which hydrogen can be released by a heating current.
