Abstract

997,901. Compression-moulding powders. E. W. BLISS CO. April 10, 1962 [April 12, 1961], No. 13892/62. Heading B5A. A compacting press for metal powders comprises a stationary die table 10 carrying a reciprocable die 44, 46, 52 having a bore 60 for receiving the powder which is compacted against the surface 66 of an ejector plunger 62 by a crank driven punch 78, the die being permitted to float with the punch during a compacting operation by the downward movement of an hydraulic cylinder 94 secured to the punch plate 82 and receiving a piston 104 to which are secured two collapsible telescopic air cylinders 112, 114, the upper parts 116 of which move downwardly with the die to compress the air in the cylinders. When the punch 78 moves upwardly at the end of the compacting operation the ejector plunger 62 and the air cylinders 112, 114 together with the die are moved upwardly to their original positions. A mandrel 68 extends axially through the plunger 62 and the bore 60, and lubricant is admitted to the space between the mandrel 68 and the plunger 62 when the latter is at the top of its stroke, and is emitted through radial holes at the upper end of the plunger 62 as the ejector descends to lubricate the bore 60 and the mandrel 68. The compacted slug is pushed off the die table 30, after being ejected from the bore, by a powder feed mechanism as it moves to recharge the bore 60.
