Abstract

587,577. Moulding-machines. HUBBERT, L. S. May 2, 1944, No. 8242. Convention date, April 2, 1943. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIX] Convention date, April 2, The mould, in which hollow briquettes are made, comprises a stationary base 69, which surrounds a vertically-reciprocable core 70, and a tubular side wall 25. With the parts in the position shown in Fig. 1, the operator presses a pushbutton and the following automatic electrically-controlled sequence of events occurs:- (1) Valve 42 reverses, whereupon liquid from pump P passes therethrough and depresses piston 21. The piston descends until its platen 22 engages stops 27 on a beam 26 which houses the mould part 25, and the plunger 23 enters the mould and slightly compresses the material therein (see Fig. 5). (2) The piston continues to descend, compressing the material and pushing the beam 26 before it, the mould part 25 sliding over the material contained therein. During this movement the retraction pistons 28, 29 descend a short distance in their cylinders. (3) When a predetermined pressure exists above the piston 21, a tonnage valve 49 opens a switch, whereupon piston 21 rises to the Fig. 1 position and stops, and valves 35, 57 are reversed. Pressure liquid thereupon passes through valves 35, 57 to depress pistons 28, 29, 63, the mould part 25 being thereby stripped from the briquette and the core 70 being lowered out of the formed briquette (see Fig. 7). (4) When the beam 26 and core 70 reach their nadir they operate switches which restore valves 35, 57, whereupon the beam 26 and core 70 rise to the positions shown in Fig. 1. As the beam rises it takes with it the briquette which has slightly expanded after removal from the mould and the briquette is removed by the operator. The cycle of operations cannot be resumed unless the beam 26 and core 70 are in their proper (raised) positions. In a modification, for making articles which cannot be removed from the mould by a simple stripping action, the mould part 25 is replaced by a fixed mould part 92 and a movable mould part 94, the latter being slidable in a beam 93 (corresponding to 26) and being operated by a hydraulic piston 95 carried by the beam 26. Stops corresponding to 27 and 67 may work within sleeves designed to prevent trapping of the operator's hands.
