An engine starter system comprises a gas turbine driven by the combustion gases of a liquid monofuel burnt in a combustion chamber to which the fuel is supplied by a pump driven by an air motor supplied with air from a reservoir. Combustion chambers 1, 2 of two starter turbines each have an ignition unit 3. A centrifugal fuel pump 4 supplies monofuel via a valve 5 to chambers 1, 2, the admission to each chamber being controlled by a solenoid fuel valve 6, electrically controlled from a box 7. Pump 4 is driven by an air motor 8, which may be a turbine, fed with compressed air from a reservoir 9 through a pressure reducing valve 10, a solenoid main air valve 11 and an air-motor control valve 12. A pair of air ducts 14, 15 lead respectively to combustion "chambers, 1, 2 under the control of scavenging valves 16. Prior to starting one or more engines, appropriate valves 16 are opened to scavenge combustion chambers 1 and/or 2, then air motor control valve 12 is opened so that monofuel is pumped to the combustion chambers. The air supply may be maintained to the combustion chambers after ignition so as to improve combustion of the monofuel. In a modification, shown by chain-dotted lines 18, the exhaust of air motor 8 may be fed to combustion chambers 1, 2 as scavenging air.
