Abstract
995,649. Air separators. K. KÍRBER. March 26, 1962 [March 27, 1961], No. 11411/62. Heading B2H. In a method for separating tobacco leaves and stalks, the material is subjected to an inclined rising air current in a curved pipe 4 whereby the leaf particles are carried in the air current while the stalks fall under the action of gravity, and whilst it is being carried in this current, it is subjected to a second rising air current, from a chamber 42 to continue the separation of the stalks and leaves; and also to a further rising air current from a chamber 44, which acts on the stalks while falling under the action of gravity to separate any remaining leaf particles therefrom. The stalks and leaves are fed from a stripper device 1 into the pipe 4, the air flow therein being provided by a fan 9 to carry the material to a separate space 23. The leaf particles move to take-off ducts 26, 27, 28 and to an extracting device 7 with a wheel 17 feeding the leaves on to a conveyer 18. The stalks are removed by a wheel 40 to a conveyer 45. The air flow through the feed pipe to the separator space 23, to the chambers 42, 44 and the exits from the ducts 26, 27, 28 can be controlled by valves and flaps, as shown, 12 being a leak control valve. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the wall 24 of the separator space is provided with screens the airflow through which is controlled by shutters.
