Abstract

994,400. Locating foreign bodies. BANG & OLUFSEN PRODUKTIONSSELSKAB A.S. July 12, 1963 [July 13, 1962; March 11, 1963], No. 27771/63. Heading A5R. [Also in Division G1] Apparatus for detecting metallic objects in human or animal tissue comprises two electrical oscillators, a controlling coil for one of the oscillators being mounted in a feeler member, and automatic frequency control means, having a large time delay, which tends to keep the frequency of the other oscillator at a predetermined spacing from the first. An oscillator 2 is coupled with the search coil 1 and its output is passed through a frequency multiplier 3 and filter 4 to a mixing circuit 7 which also receives the output from an oscillator 5 through a filter 6. The beat frequency, which is preferably of the order of 400 c/s., is passed through a volume control 8 and amplifier 9 to an earpiece 10, so that if the search coil 1 is brought near to a metallic object the frequency of oscillator 2 is changed and the resultant change of output tone is apparent in the earpiece 10. In order to prevent the apparatus being influenced by large masses of metal in the vicinity of the patient, part of the output is passed through an amplifier 11 and counting device 12, 13, 14 to an automatic frequency control 15 which changes the frequency of oscillator 5 in such a way as to tend to maintain the original output tone constant. However, it does so with appreciable time delay so that although it corrects for large static metal masses, whereby they have no effect on the operation of the equipment, it does not influence the change in output tone resulting from the comparatively rapid movement of the search coil 1 in the vicinity of metal to be located. If the output frequency becomes so high that the circuit 12, 13, 14 cannot follow it, it passes through a high-pass filter 16 to actuate a relay 17 which applies to the A.F.C. circuit 15 a voltage of sufficient magnitude to restore the output to a frequency which the circuit 12, 13, 14 can accommodate.
