Abstract

<PICT:0994162/C1/1> In the production of calcium carbide, a charge which contains calcium oxide and carbonaceous material is preheated to 800 DEG to 850 DEG C., in one or more shafts placed adjacent to a closed electric smelting furnace, by means of a current of oxygen-free combustion gas, and the preheated charge is then transferred, without cooling, to the smelting furnace. The combustion gas may be produced by burning CO-rich gas evolved in the smelting furnace itself during the smelting operation, in combustion chambers connected individually to the shafts. As shown in the drawing, the charge is preheated in the shaft furnace 5 and then transferred to the smelting furnace, whithout cooling, by pipe 8. Gas generated during smelting, withdrawn through pipe 17, is cleaned and then supplied to combustion chamber 21, in which it is burnt with air from fan 22. The temperature of the chamber 21 is regulated by passing into the chamber via pipe line 23 a proportion of recycled gas which has already passed through the preheating furnace.
