Abstract

Iron oxide is reduced by means of a large excess of solid carbonaceous reducing agent in a rotary kiln operating at sub-atmospheric pressure and heated by the introduction of preheated combustible gas at one end of the kiln in amount sufficient to avoid, as far as possible, the direct combustion of solid carbonaceous material, and oxygen containing gas introduced through side tubes distributed along the kiln, in an amount sufficient to give the desired temperature distribution in the kiln and to burn completely the combustible gas, the feed material occupying 25-45% of the kiln volume. As combustible gas, petroleum gas, coal gas or water gas may be used, which may be indirectly preheated and may be completely burned before reaching the preheating zone at the charging end of the kiln. Ilmenite, magnetite, or taconite ore may be reduced by this process, and they may be pelletised using 5% Na Cl as binder. Five times the amount of reducing agent theoretically required may be used, the excess being separated from the reduced material and recycled.
