993, 715. Measuring electrically. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. March 8, 1963 [Dec. 11, 1961], No. 44208/61. Heading G1N. A transducer for measuring tilt comprises a sealed, curved, glass tube 111 (Fig. 2) filled with a conducting electrolyte 112 and containing a bubble 113 of e.g. air, having a central electrode 115 and two end electrodes 116, 117, whereby when the transducer is tilted the resistance between electrodes 115, 116 and between 115, 117 differs by an amount which is measured in a bridge circuit, and is indicative of the magnitude and direction of the tilt. The glass tube may be externally cylindrical and internally barrel-shaped (Fig. 4): the electrolyte is preferably a solution of lithium chloride in alcohol: the bubble may be a liquid or gas, heavier or lighter than the electrolyte: the electrodes are preferably platinum, treated to provide a sponge surface, and mounted on an insulating bridge member 314, or the end electrodes may be formed on a ring 316 on the inner surface of the glass tube 311.
