For measuring the conductivity of a liquid in a container 10 of higher conductivity an A6 current is measured between the container 10 and an electrode 12 contained in a glass bulb 11 having a thin enough wall to allow the passage of hydrogen ions from an acid, such as hydrochloric acid, within the bulb to the liquid. This electrode may also be used, in conjunction with a salt bridge 13 containing potassium chloride and a chloride coated silver or calomel electrode 15, to measure the pH of the liquid. The two measuring circuits are isolated by a capacitor 21. The measuring circuit 20 employs a bridge and standard impedance 40. A circuit employing a high gain amplifier is also described (Fig. 2 not shown) when the current through a negative feedback circuit or the voltage across the amplifier output may be measured to give an indication without taking power for the measuring instrument from the circuit including the liquid. The glass electrode bulb may be of soda glass about 5/1000 inch thick.
