A device for trimming the weld ridge 14 from a chain link comprises a cutting device which can be thrust forward to trim the upper surface of the link by edges 38 in arrow formation and which is then actuated to move two axial cutting edges 39 in opposite directions to trim the remaining ridge. The link 10 is supported by upsetting tools 13 in a chain-welding machine. Screws 36, 37 secure a tool having a helical edge 38 and an axial edge 39 to an arm 32 which can be rocked by a fluid-pressure operated piston 30. A similar arm 33 carrying a similar tool is rocked by a second piston 30, both arms being advanced initially by a piston 16. The pistons 30 may be replaced by cams or omitted. In the latter case, the piston 16 continues its forward advance to actuate the arms by cams. In a further modification, the movement of one axial edge lags slightly behind, and overlaps, that of the other. Specification 738,998 is referred to.
