In a horizontal boring and milling machine the tool head 1 is movable up and down on a column 3 by a screw 4, the column being rotatably attached to a slide 7, slidable on the bed 8. glide 7 is movable along inclined faces 10, 11 and a horizontal surface 14 on the bed, and is clamped in position by clamps 16, 19, the clamps being automatically released during movements of the slide. In a modification, Fig. 2, there is only a single inclined guiding surface 10<SP>1</SP>, and slide 7 is clamped by a wedge 26 which is automatically released during the movement of the slide.
