Abstract

989,698. Cooling dynamo-electric machines. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. April 9, 1964 [April 11, 1963], No. 14522/63. Heading H2A. In a machine cooled by the evaporation of liquid e.g. a halogenated hydrocarbon in longitudinal ducts in the stator and recondensed in a cooler 26 higher than the machine, gravity circulation of the cooling medium is achieved by the slope of the cooler causing the liquid to flow in one direction. The stator endspaces 21, 22 are sealed by rings 23, 24 and a fibreglass sleeve 25 bonded into the stator bore. The condenser is connected to these end-spaces by passages 29, 30, the condensate returning through duct 36 from the lower end of the condenser. As shown, the rotor is cooled by water fed to an annular space 42 within the rotor stack through suitable bores, but in a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) the rotor receives the same coolant as the stator and from the same condenser. The stator terminals may be immersed in the liquid.
