Abstract

987,819. Packaging envelopes. R. WINKLER, and K. DUNNEBIER. April 23, 1963 [May 3, 1962], No. 15948/63. Heading B8C. Apparatus for packing packets of envelopes or the like into folding boxes or cartons is characterized in that the direction of movement of the boxes is in a horizontal, straight line perpendicular to the direction of movement of the envelopes while the direction of removal of the filled boxes is parallel to the direction of movement of the envelopes or downwards. Packets P of envelopes are pushed on to a table 1, the last of a predetermined number initiating a working cycle of the machine and thus causing chains 10 with attachments 11 thereon to move an open unfilled carton from a pile I to a filling station II. Spring guides 65, 67 are swung into the carton mouth and the packets of envelopes are pushed therein by pusher arms 19 on a carriage 18, which carriage is mounted on a threaded shaft 13 and splined shaft 14 and moves towards the carton due to the rotation of the shaft 13. The arms 19 are brought into engagement with the packets by rotation of the shaft 14. The guides, carriage and arms then return to their initial positions and the side flaps of the carton closure which were opened by an air-blast prior to the filling operation are folded in by sliding elements (not shown). The chain 10 then moves the carton to station III where the bottom closure flap is folded in by a guide 83 and the top closure flap is gummed and then folded on to the bottom closure flap by a guide 86. Finally the carton passes to a drying station IV from which it is removed either parallel to the direction of movement of the envelopes before they are inserted into the cartons or downwards.
