Abstract

1489799 Cartoning PORTION PACKAGING Ltd 21 May 1975 21840/75 Heading B8C An automatic cartoning apparatus comprises means 18 for advancing a conveyer 1 incremently, means 3 for withdrawing a carton blank 2 from a stack and erecting it on the conveyer 1, means for guiding articles into the erected carton 2 at a position spaced from the withdrawing means 3, means 6 for closing end flaps 34, 34a and then side flaps 33, 33a of the carton 2 and control means for advancing the conveyer 1 to move the carton 2 through the erecting, filling and closing stages in succession. Articles such as containers of cream may be packed, e.g. 100 to a carton. The conveyer 1 is of endless roller chain form, having plates 12 bearing guides 13 between which the cartons are received. Advance of the conveyer 1 is effected by ram means 18, bearing latches 22 for co-operation with pins 25 projecting from the conveyer chain, the latches 22 being pivotable against springs 24 during the return stroke. Erection.-The carton blanks are removed from the stack and opened out by suction cups 48 on a cross head 45 reciprocable by pneumatic means 43, guide means 40 causing an end panel 36 of the carton to become perpendicular to a side panel 35. For filling, the carton is advanced between guides 30 below a shoot 5, and the articles are fed from a trough 53, after retracting a gate (55), Fig. 8 (not shown), adjacent a guide surface 56. An adjustable end wall 59 acts as further guide means. . The carton is then advanced to the closing means, at which it is shaken by plates (63), Fig. 10 (not shown), reciprocated vertically by pneumatic means 61 to settle the contents. An oblique ram 64 then advances a shoe 67, Fig. 11 (not shown), to close a trailing end flap 34a while a plate 69 acts to close the leading end flap 34, and movement of the carton below guide means 8 closes the side flaps 33, 33a. A ram 71 is then operable to discharge the carton to a taping mechanism 73. Control is effected by cams (78)-(84), Fig. 15 (not shown), driven by a motor (74).
