Abstract
Yarns or fabrics are rendered receptive to dyes having an affinity for cellulose by treating them with an aqueous colloidal sol of fibrous boehmite (Al2O2 . 1H2O) containing an amphoteric detergent which is preferably the alkali metal salt of a C10 to C18 aliphatic imidazoline carboxylic acid, thereafter curing the so-treated fibres to bond the fibrous boehmite, then applying an alkaline solution of hydroxyethyl-cellulose and thereafter coagulating the hydroxyethylcellulose to a water-insoluble form. The yarn or fabrics may be of cellulose acetate and triacetate, polyamides, polyesters, polyolefins, acrylic polymers, saponified diacetate or glass fibres or mixtures thereof with or without cellulose fibres, e.g. cotton or viscose. The fibrous boehmite to be used is modified by adsorbed acetate ions or other acid radicals; a dispersible boehmite powder contains, for example, 70% Al2O3 and 10% CH3COOH and its sol has a pH of 4, the particles being positively charged. The preferred hydroxyethylcellulose has an ethylene oxide content of 4%, the degree of substitution being 0.15. The hydroxyethylcellulose solution may also contain the amphoteric detergent. The coagulation may be effected by the following means:- alkaline coagulants, acid coagulants, solutions of acid salts, acids in the vapour phase, acid reacting salt solutions or heat, e.g. hot air, infra-red or steam. Many suitable dyes are listed which are reactive, vat, sulphur azo, chrome and direct dyes. Examples of the treatment, dyeing and printing of textile materials are given.
