Abstract

Fibres or films are rendered dye receptive by applying an aqueous solution of a Wernertype reactive chromium complex and a watersoluble acid salt of deacetylated chitin and then heating to cure the so-applied dye receptive surface. The process is applicable to yarns and fabrics of glass fibres, yarns, fabrics and films of polyolefins, yarns and fabrics of acrylic polymers, vinylidene/vinyl chloride copolymers, polyesters, polyamides, cellulose acetate, cellulose triacetate, saponified cellulose acetate and also to silk and wool. The so-treated materials may then be dyed with reactive, chrome, acid, direct, sulphur, vat, indigosol, basic, disperse acetate and naphthol dyes. Specified reactive chromium complexes are p-aminobenzoato chromic chloride, betaresorcylato chromic chloride, glycinato chromic chloride, tannato chromic chloride, glycolato chromic chloride, thioglycolato chromic chloride and sorbato chromic chloride. Specified acid salts of deacetylated chitin are the acetic, itaconic, formic, pyruvic and lactic acid salts. Discharge effects on the treated and dyed fabrics may be effected by the application of an acid, e.g. sulphuric or hydrochloric acid, although in one example, an acrylic fabric treated and dyed with a reactive or chrome dye is discharged in selected areas with sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate. Numerous examples of treating and dyeing are given, and in one example, a glass fibre fabric is treated and printed with a paste containing a reactive dyestuff, urea and an emulsion thickening. Specification 458,839 is referred to.
