Abstract

The resistance to abrasion of fibrous materials, e.g., natural or synthetic textile fibres, threads, filaments or fabrics, is improved by impregnating them with a silicic acid ester containing only ester groups attached directly to the silicon atom, hydrolysis of the ester being substantially prevented before impregnation, and then heating to deposit silica in the fibres. Specified esters are methyl, ethyl, propyl and octyl silicates. The ester may be applied alone or as a solution in, for example, benzene, toluene, trichlorethylene or an alcohol, or as an aqueous emulsion. Specified textile materials are cotton, rayon, wool, asbestos and glass fibres.
