Abstract

984,740. Joint-making packing; pipe joints. HENRY CROSSLEY (PACKINGS) Ltd. Sept. 25, 1962 [Nov. 28, 1961], No. 42446/61. Headings F2B and F2G. A seal of substantially cylindrical section for a high pressure pipe or tube joint comprises a hard steel ring A segmented at an angle into three or more parts and having an approximately triangular section with a radial projecting part extending outwards from the apex of the triangular section, and pads D<SP>1</SP>, D<SP>2</SP> of rubber-like or plastic material which bear upon the tapered sides of the ring A and extend to the sides of the seal making contact with small segmented rings B<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>2</SP> resting on the ends of the tapered sides of the ring A adjacent its cylindrical bore, continuous or segmental rings C<SP>1</SP> to C<SP>4</SP> being provided on the external periphery of the seal around the pads D<SP>1</SP>, D<SP>2</SP> and all the rings being bonded to the pads by the application of heat. The rings B and C prevent extrusion of the pads at high pressures and may be made of zinc or copper alloys, soft iron, steel or titanium. The material for the pads may be natural or synthetic rubber or P.T.F.E. which may contain fillers and may be covered by a metallic cloth or a textile cloth which may be reinforced by metal wire. An air gap E is provided around the seal which is inserted in a recess in one of the pipes or tubes.
